Vocalist and songwriter Nicola Hitchcock and Saul Freeman Ex-Thieves joined forces in the mid-nineties to form Mandalay, signed to V2 records and released three albums. Mandalay's debut album "Empathy" release in 1998. In 2000, Mandalay release their second album "Instinct". In 2001, "Solace" a two disc album released exclusively in the US. Disc one of the album Solace included a mix of tracks from the albums Empathy and Instinct and disc two remix tracks with contributions from several artists including Nitin Sawhney, Wagon Christ, Futureshock, Alex Reece, Calderone and Charlie May.
Incorporating guest musicians Jon Hassell and Steve Jansen (Japan), Freeman's intimate, pristine production and Hitchcock's heartbreaking vocal performances earned the duo props throughout the latter part of the decade in their native U.K., specifically with the albums Empathy and Instinct.

Just like you did before you said
It's too short how long I said
Is too short
Who's to blame
I contemplate if it's true
I'm born to remain star-crossed seems
Discreet
And if I found
What she said was true
What she said about you
What she said trust you
I should have known
When you said that you'd choose me
All that I want
Is to see some truth reflected
And to learn somehow
And to be strong somehow
In the state of mind
I'm in
And if I found
What she said was true
What she said about you
What she said trust you
I should have known
When you said that you'd choose me
separate stay strong
Separate be bold
Separate be brave
Separate you'll grow
Separate be brave
Separate stay
And if I found
What she said was true
What she said about you
What she said trust you
I should have known
When you said that you'd choose me.
The lyrics of Mandalay's song "About You" seem to be about a relationship that's on the rocks. The first verse is about counting down, and it seems that the singer is waiting for something to happen. The next lines show the conflict between the two people involved. One person says that it's too short, and the other one questions who's to blame. It's unclear who's in the right and who's wrong. The singer contemplates whether or not it's true that they're "born to remain star-crossed". There's an implication that the person they're with isn't "respectable" or "discreet".
The chorus of the song repeats the "what she said" phrase. This seems to suggest that there might be a third person involved or some gossip about one of the people in the relationship. The singer questions whether they should have known something when the person said they would choose them. The second verse repeats the "what she said" phrase as the singer expresses a desire for truth and strength. The bridge section of the song is about being separate, strong, bold, and brave. Finally, the last part of the chorus repeats that same "what she said" phrase and ends with the same realization that the singer should have known something when the person said they would choose them.
Overall, the song seems to be about a relationship that's not working out. There are doubts and suspicions from both sides, and the singer is questioning whether they should have seen the signs. The repeated phrases of "what she said" seem to be a whisper of what's going on behind the scenes or gossip that has affected the relationship.
