A Secret Society
Manic Street Preachers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's here, it's a secret, a secret society
It's here, it's a secret, a secret society

It's gone beyond me, beyond my vulnerability
Science fiction for the masses with no reality
Ban all this religion, wipe it out and start again
Democracy, the highest state that man has learnt to invent
For all the glitter
For all the poise
For all the love that
We have destroyed

It's gone beyond me, beyond my vulnerability
Science fiction for the masses with no reality
Ban all this religion, wipe it out and start again
Democracy, the highest state that man has learnt to invent

The secret societies
Prevail like deities
Protecting us from our fear
To keep our libertine

God save the politicians
God save the mad parade

God save all the people
Whose lives that we have betrayed

Overall Meaning

The song "A Secret Society" by Manic Street Preachers is a commentary on the negative effects of organized religion and how it has been used to manipulate and control people for centuries, often causing more harm than good. The lyrics emphasize the need to replace religion with democracy, which the band sees as a system that has shown promise as a way for people to govern themselves, even if it is not perfect. The chorus ("It's here, it's a secret, a secret society") suggests that there are powerful forces at work behind the scenes that are not always visible to the common person, and that we should be wary of such groups and their agendas.

The last verse of the song ("God save the politicians...") raises the issue of responsibility, and how we all share in the blame for the state of the world today. The politicians are not the only ones at fault, but rather we are all responsible for the decisions we make, the actions we take, and the consequences that result. This final verse is a call to action, urging us to do better and to work towards a more just and equitable society.

Even in lost tracks, hidden tracks, obscure B-sides James can still do an incredible guitar solo. The man is a genius. Without question.

Good luck finding anyone willing to sell you their CD copy! :/ I don't have it either. Still, for those who have it, it's kind of nice that a limited release *is* limited and not just live tracks and/or remixes.

It was a digital release only
