Golden Platitudes
Manic Street Preachers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The platitudes they all dissolved
They got too deep, got too involved
The platitudes just interludes
To break the trust with me and you

Oh what a Shangri-la
Oh what a shell we are
Oh what a mess we've made
What happened to those days
When everything seemed possible
With no-one to tell you no

Where did the feeling go?
Where did it all go wrong?
Born to be a communist
But then the marriage failed
As did the partnership

The platitudes they all dissolved
They got too deep, got too involved
The platitudes just interludes
To break the trust with me and you

I fell back in love with love
I know that it might sound odd
The liberal left destroyed
Every bit of our youth
Left with the barest of bones
Leaving us all with holes

Where did it all go wrong?
Where did the feeling go?
Why colonise the moon
When every different kind
Of desperation exists?

In every single home
Where did the feeling go?

Where did the feeling go?
Where did it all go wrong?

Overall Meaning

In "Golden Platitudes," Manic Street Preachers reflect on the disillusionment of idealistic beliefs and the breaking of trust. The song captures a sense of regret and loss for a time when everything seemed possible, without limitations or boundaries. The platitudes, which once provided comfort and hope, have now dissolved into nothingness. They got too deep and involved, leading to broken trust between people. The repeated lines "where did the feeling go?" and "where did it all go wrong?" emphasize the confusion and sadness of the situation.

The lyrics also touch on political ideals and the failure of left-wing ideology. The band sings about being born to be a communist, but the marriage and partnership failed, leading them to feel betrayed by the "liberal left." The desire to colonize the moon is criticized as a distraction from the many problems faced by people on Earth.

Glad to hear the Manics are still taking on newer/younger fans. I have been into them since the early 90's (saw them live back in 1993!). They are my favourite group, but unlike most "older" Manics fans I prefer their stuff post Holy Bible, and think this album, "Postcards From A Young Man " is one of their best!

Kieron Smyth

One of the best songs off one of their best albums. Love it.

Jaime LLamas Diez

Tremenda canción, la mejor del álbum y una de las mejores de los MSP

Iain Robb

Magnificent track. Easily their finest song from their last three albums. Unfortunately, they don't use the beautiful choir on this except as a backing track live.
