O Holy Night
Mannheim Steamroller Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

O holy night.
The stars are brightly shining.
It is the night of our dear Savior's birth.
(Oh yes it is now.)
Long lay the world
In sin and error pining
'Til He appeared
And the soul felt its worth.
A thrill of hope
The weary world rejoices
For yonder breaks
A new and glorious morn.

Fall on your knees
O hear the angels' voices
O night divine
O o night when Christ was born
O night
O holy, holy night
O night divine

Fall on your knees
O hear the angels' voices
O night divine
O o night when Christ was born
O night
O night
O holy night

O night divine
Mmm

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Mannheim Steamroller’s "O Holy Night" describe the profound impact of the birth of Jesus Christ. The writer starts by describing the night as holy and the stars as brightly shining, setting the tone for the rest of the song. The next line refers to the birth of Jesus as the reason for the holy night. The third line, "Oh yes it is now," emphasizes the importance and excitement of this moment.

The following lines describe the state of the world before the birth of Jesus christ. The world was in sin and darkness, and people were pining for redemption. The next line describes the transformation caused by the arrival of Jesus, and how it made the souls feel worthy again. This part of the song touches on a common theme of the holiday season - forgiveness, redemption, and the hope for a better future.

The final lines emphasize the significance of the birth of Christ to the world. The arrival of Jesus ushered in a new era of hope and joy, and the whole world rejoices in it. The angels’ voices are heard, and the writer encourages the listeners to fall on their knees in praise and adoration. The final line repeats the phrase, "O holy night, O night divine" and serves as a reminder of the timeless significance of the birth of Jesus to Christians all over the world.

My late father's Christmas album of all time. It has been 11 years since he died of ALS and I still miss him. Songs like these make me remember the times we had when he would play this on the way home from Christmas Eve when I was a small boy. They were tears of sadness at first listening to songs like this after his death, but now they are tears of joy and reverence. I miss you Dad. We will meet again.

Hello, I just read this as I'm listening to one of many Christmas songs, my sister is in hospice care at this moment, ALS 2 years, so I am in mourning and have been as I watched her illness take over. I pray you are comforted and I know faith is important at this time. Wish you well

@@vickieshrewsbury4796 God bless you. What a connection! There was a relief when dad transitioned from this world. No more suffering. I pray you and your family take care of yourselves during this time. I’m sorry you are dealing with this. Get involved with these als charities in your area. They really helped us out with resources and we are Donors every year.

Chip Davis and his Mannheim Steamroller bandmates deliver a touching, compelling instrumental rendition of one of the greatest sacred Christmas carols ever composed.

I have been listening to this masterpiece since I first heard it in college. It is a brief moment I take and let the instruments fill my soul, reminding me to find the peace in my soul. This is proof that music speaks louder than words. Thank you Chip.

So so so beautiful. My absolute favorite Christmas song.

It brings me to my knees at that one particular point EVERY time I listen to it. No other piece has really affected me so.
