Mantovani was born in Venice, Italy and his father was the concertmaster of La Scala orchestra under Arturo Toscanini. His family moved to England in 1912, where he studied at Trinity College of Music in London. After graduation, he formed his own orchestra, which played in and around Birmingham. By the time World War II broke out, his orchestra was one of the most popular in England, both on the BBC and in live performances.

I worry and wonder
Your lips may be near
But where is your heart
It's always like this
I worry and wonder
You're close to me here
It's a sad thing to realize
That you've a heart that never melts
When we kiss, do you close your eyes
Pretending that I'm someone else
You must break the spell
This cloud that I'm under
So please won't you tell
Darling, where is your heart
The Moulin Rouge Theme by Mantovani is a beautiful instrumental piece that perfectly captures the essence of romance and feelings of uncertainty that often accompany it. The title of the song refers to the famous nightclub in Paris, which was known for its lively atmosphere and sometimes scandalous entertainment.
The lyrics of the song tell a story of a relationship where one person is unsure if their partner truly loves them. Whenever they kiss, they can't help but worry and wonder if their partner's heart is really in it. They feel like their partner is physically present, but emotionally distant. The singer laments that their partner seems to have a heart that never melts, and wonders if they are just pretending that they are someone else when they kiss.
The song is a beautiful expression of the insecurity and doubt that often accompany love. It perfectly captures the feeling of being close to someone yet feeling emotionally distant from them. The haunting melody and sweeping orchestration create an atmosphere of melancholic romance, making this a timeless classic.

Whenever we kiss
Every time we kiss
I worry and wonder
I become anxious and curious
Your lips may be near
Your mouth is in close proximity to mine
But where is your heart
But emotionally, where are you?
It's always like this
This keeps happening
I worry and wonder
I feel uneasy and inquisitive
You're close to me here
You are physically near to me
But where is your heart
But where are your deeper feelings?
It's a sad thing to realize
It's unfortunate to understand
That you've a heart that never melts
You possess a heart that is unfeeling
When we kiss, do you close your eyes
Do you shut your eyes when we kiss?
Pretending that I'm someone else
Imagining that I am a different person
You must break the spell
You need to snap out of it
This cloud that I'm under
This haze that I am in
So please won't you tell
So, could you kindly inform me
Darling, where is your heart
Dear, where do your affections truly lie?
