The lyrics of María Dolores Pradera's song "El ausente" tell a story of a man who has returned home after a long absence, hoping to be reunited with his lover. The man acknowledges that he was wrong to leave, and that he lost a love that he once had because of his wandering ways. He compares his lover to a delicate flower ("amapolita") cut at dawn, implying that she is fragile and precious. He questions why his lover would deny him the light of day now that he has returned, and suggests that her hope may have faded just as his did when he lost his love.
The man then addresses a "shining star" in the red sky, urging it to help him win back his lover. He boasts of being the one who was absent, and declares that he will not accept anything less than her love. The song ends with the triumphant declaration that the man has returned and will not be denied.
