Once Upon A Time
Mary Wells Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Once upon a time I almost lost my mind
I was lonely
So lonely
Once upon a time

Hoping every day things would go my way
Then you came into my life
Now everything is fine

I never knew what love could do 'til I met you
Now everything is oh-so cozy
Now my skies are blue all because of you
I'm so glad
I was lonely
Once upon a time

I never knew what love could do 'til I met you
Now everything is oh-so cozy
Now my skies are blue all because of you
I'm so glad
I was lonely
Once upon a time

I was lonely
Once upon a time
Oh-so lonely
Once upon a time

I was lonely
Once upon a time

Overall Meaning

Mary Wells's song "Once Upon A Time" is a touching and emotional ballad that speaks to the experience of loneliness and heartache, and the transformative power of love. The opening lines of the song set the tone for a story of near despair: "Once upon a time I almost lost my mind, I was lonely, so lonely, once upon a time." This sense of sorrow is deepened by the repetition of "once upon a time," a phrase that conjures up fairy tales and happy endings, but here takes on a bleak and hopeless quality.

However, the song takes a positive turn with the introduction of a new character: "Then you came into my life, now everything is fine." This shift is powerful, as Wells conveys how the arrival of love can completely change one's outlook. "I never knew what love could do till I met you," she sings, and it's clear that this person has given her a sense of purpose and joy she never thought possible.

The final lines of the song bring everything together, as Wells expresses her appreciation for the love that has lifted her out of her sadness. "Now my skies are blue all because of you," she sings, "I'm so glad; I was lonely once upon a time." The repetition of "once upon a time" now takes on a different tone, one of reflection rather than despair. The song is a testament to the power of love to transform even the darkest of moments into something beautiful.

I have this LP Extended Version. It is one of my favorites- Hail to the King and Queen of Motown. Their voices blended very well together and they sung a variety of songs that showed their versatility. My favorite is the old standard song- I Love You For Sentimental Reasons.
