All I Need
Mat Kearney Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Here it comes it's all blowing in tonight
I woke up this morning to a blood red sky
They're burning on the bridge turning off the lights
We're on the run I can see it in your eyes
If nothing is safe then I don't understand
You call me your boy but I'm trying to be the man
One more day and it's all slipping with the sand
You touch my lips and grab the back of my hand
The back of my hand

Guess we both know we're in over our heads
We got nowhere to go and no home that's left
The water is rising on a river turning red
It all might be OK or we might be dead
If everything we've got is slipping away
I meant what I said when I said until my dying day
I'm holding on to you, holding onto me
Maybe it's all gone black but you're all I see
You're all I see

The walls are shaking, I hear them sound the alarm
Glass is breaking so don't let go of my arm
Grab your bags and a picture of where we met
All that we'll leave behind and all that's left
If everything we've got is blowing away
We've got a rock and a rock till our dying day
I'm holding on to you, holding on to me
Maybe it's all we got but it's all I need

You're all I need
And if all we've got is what no one can break
I know I love you
If that's all we can take
The tears are coming down
They're mixing with the rain

I know I love you, if that's all we can take
A pool is running for miles on the concrete ground
We're eight feet deep and the rain is still coming down

The TV's playing it all out of town
We're grabbing at the fray for something that won't drown

Overall Meaning

This song by Mat Kearney, titled "All I Need," seems to tell a story about a moment of crisis between two people who are in a romantic relationship. The situation appears to be one of chaos and confusion, with both individuals feeling like they are in over their heads. The chorus of the song, which repeats the phrase "You're all I need," suggests that despite the tumultuous circumstances, the two people are holding on to one another and finding comfort in each other's presence.

The opening lyrics set the scene for the chaos that is to come: "Here it comes it's all blowing in tonight / I woke up this morning to a blood red sky / They're burning on the bridge turning off the lights." The sense of danger is palpable, as the sky is red and there is mention of a bridge on fire. The lines "You call me your boy but I'm trying to be the man / One more day and it's all slipping with the sand" suggest that one of the people feels a sense of responsibility for their safety and well-being, as well as the survival of their relationship.

The chorus of the song, which repeats the phrase "You're all I need," suggests that despite the tumultuous circumstances, the two people are holding on to one another and finding comfort in each other's presence. This could be interpreted as a statement about the power of love to help people weather difficult times. The verses, on the other hand, present a more specific narrative about a moment of crisis between two people who are struggling to navigate a chaotic situation. Overall, the song seems to be about the way that love can provide a sense of stability and hope even in the midst of uncertainty and danger.

Season 3, episode 1... probably my favorite episode of the inteire series. It’s simple, but touching, realistic, but beautiful... perfect! The first 3 seasons were, no doubt, the most stunning ever ❤️

Maybe not the saddest song ever but by God, that piano is heart-breakingly beautiful.

It's about Katrina, & my boyfriend who was killed by a boat ran over him twice. "Water is rising on a river turning red,it all might be OK or we might be dead" He died on a river turning red & it was all on the TV out of town, grabbing at that fray for something that won't drown". If we had gotten married like we planned, my life would have been very different. I can hear him in this song...and if all we've got, is something no one can take, I know I love you...all the little lines ...and you grab the back of my hand. I have a picture he's behind me with his hand on my stomach and I'm grabbing the back of his hand, holding onto to me holding onto to you...we never had a argument & he gave me a promise ring in high school & he already planned our lives. He was my soulmate. Definitely one of the saddest songs ever for me. 30 yrs & I still miss him, he felt like home. But that wasn't my path.
