Bullet Proof Weeks
Matt Nathanson Lyrics

The beginning and the end
September took the tourist
And settled in for good
You could hear the trains again
Brooklyn girls in scarves
Summer left and no one said a word
We'd open your window
Stay in your bed
All day 'til the street lights came on
[Chorus]
So what happened to bulletproof weeks in your arms?
What happened to feeling cheap radio songs?
What happened to thinking the world was flat?
What happened to that?
Up on 59th street
Right before the rain
Lovers catching taxis going downtown
I'm talking to what's left of you
Watching what I say
Counting all the freckles on your perfect face
You open your window
And I stay on your bed
Just hoping that right words will come
[Chorus: x2]
Its all gone, love, it's all wrong
[Chorus]
The lyrics of "Bullet Proof Weeks" by Matt Nathanson are a reflection on the passing of time and the fading of youthful love. The song starts by describing the season of September settling in, indicating a transition from summer to fall. The passing of time is further emphasized by the line "Somewhere in between the beginning and the end." The nostalgic tone of the song is established by the image of Brooklyn girls in scarves, evoking a sense of longing for a time that has passed.
The song then shifts to a memory of being with a lover, spending the whole day in bed and "hoping that right words will come." This nostalgic remembrance is contrasted with the present, where the singer is "counting all the freckles on your perfect face," indicating that they are no longer in the same place, have grown apart, or possibly even separated.
The chorus then asks a series of questions that are rhetorical in nature, expressing the singer's disillusionment with what the relationship has become. The bulletproof weeks in their arms, the feeling of cheap radio songs, and the idea of thinking the world was flat are all symbolic of the simplicity and naivety of the early stages of love. The repetition of the chorus highlights the frustration and sadness that the singer is feeling.
Overall, "Bullet Proof Weeks" portrays a sense of sadness and longing for love that has been lost, and the disillusionment that comes with the passing of time.

Played this to my Dad as we sat round the bed watching him pass. He wasn't conscious, but he smiled. Powerful song.
