Just kinda wears me out
And all these salesmen
Baby make me tired
They're no good
Tell you the truth she said
I've been getting' used to liars
Store-bought words
They make promises
Like politicians
So we stumble
And we disconnect
Over and over again
This modern love
Is not enough
She said watch your back
I'm nobody's girlfriend
This modern love
Is not enough
Oh oh oh oh oh
They said one big exhale never did me no
Good
I let 'em in I
Oh man I let 'em win
I burned my house down
Just to hear 'em scream my name
I've carried hope
And heavy daydreams
She said
But I'm done with sleepin'
Take the phone calls
Take this circus
Take the drama
'Cause baby it's just worthless
This modern love
Is not enough
She said watch your back
I'm nobody's girlfriend
This modern love
Is not enough
Oh oh oh oh oh
They said one big exhale never did me no
Good
One big exhale never did me no good
And the bright lights shine
Still we ache 'n' we break n we
Try
The stage lights shine
And they blind our eyes
To it all
Oh oh
Still we ache 'n' we break 'n' we just can't
Get it right
This modern love
Is not enough
She said watch your back
I'm nobody's girlfriend
This modern love
Is not enough
Oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh
This modern love
Yeah it's a taco truck
Come on take the phone calls
And I'll take the silence
This modern love
Is not enough
Oh oh oh oh
Oh
Yeah one big exhale
Never did me no good
One exhale
One big exhale yeah
One exhale
Never did me no good
Oh never did me no good
The lyrics to Matt Nathanson's song "Modern Love" are a statement about the failed promises of love in modern times. The singer is tired of "store-bought words" and the empty promises of love songs and politicians. The reference to salesmen suggests that love has become a commodity, something that can be marketed and sold for profit. The line "they're no good, tell you the truth she said, I've been getting used to liars" indicates that the singer is tired of being deceived and wants something genuine.
The chorus repeats the phrase "this modern love is not enough" as a statement of the singer's dissatisfaction with superficial relationships. The line "I'm nobody's girlfriend" suggests that the singer wants more than just a casual fling or temporary romance. The bridge of the song speaks to the struggle of trying to find true love in a world full of distractions and temptation. The bright lights and stage shine may be metaphors for the distractions of fame or success, suggesting that these things can get in the way of forming meaningful relationships.
Overall, "Modern Love" is a commentary on the superficiality and disappointment of modern relationships. The focus on love songs and politicians as empty promises speaks to the commercialization of love in popular culture, and the struggle to find something real amidst all the noise.

I gotta say Matt is one of the most down to earth artists I have ever seen. He truly is himself and it humbles you down. I saw him in SF at the Alice&Zen festival last September. He performed this song along with other good songs including his amazing "Come on get Higher". It's funny when he sang this song I could totally relate to it! Matt is one a kind!
