I'm deeply atheistic, and I say that here just to lend emphasis to the fact that I think that this song's message is very powerful and positive and that it's the sort of thing that could make a small but real and beneficial difference to the world, and that (less importantly but still importantly) Matthew West is a very talented musician. I don't even slightly share West's faith, but I can agree from a secular standpoint that this song has a very good message and also that it's good musically.

THOS not only applies to Christians. I'm an atheist, but I love this song. We all need to step out of our comfort zones and do something for another. Our individual lives don't matter. We really matter when we all stick together and coexist. It's not even just about tolerating one another either. There are many starving, many who are abused, teens who come home with red eyes and the smell of smoke on their clothes, children who are afraid of their parents because they hit them, people in Africa who can't even drink clan water, one of the most plentiful things in the world. How sad is that, that some can't even get a grasps on the most plentiful thing? There are people who have no future and a bad past. People sitting on the street dangling their tin cups about, asking for just change, and so many pass them by, they don't even care. And that's sad, that this is what we call society. We all are too busy tightening our ties and putting on watches, driving around and having fun to care about anyone else. What do those beggars on the street have to go home to? They don't have homes. They have nothing but you and the clothes on their back, and they're only counting on you. They've given up any hope of living a life. They're lives and futures aren't in their hands anymore. They depend only on you now. So many of us just ignore the bad things in the hopes that they will just go away with time. They won't. It only takes a few dimes, a comment like "I love you" or "you are special and you are cared about". That's all we need, just to set aside differences and come together as a whole.
Only then will out world be a good place.

@SpingTheKitty. When you say I don’t believe that god was able to create a world in a week, than I would like to open you up to a new idea. God may have different day times, for his world in heaven it may have cycles that last 100 years and to him it may be just 24 hours. In heaven, there most likely is no sense of time. Which may also mean that earth or the world was created indefinitely, in an infinite time, as if it was always being worked on. Each day being an infinite time, but with all 7 infinite’s it is one infinite span of time, not 7. To sum up, God didn’t necessarily create the world and all the universes in just under 168 hours.

I can tell you we acknowledge His power and sovereignty in all things... but what is clear... is He has given man freedom of choice.... and that is the overriding reason we see such hopelessness and brutality in this world.... our selfishness, prie and lust for power destructive and lead to misery.....A God that controls all things, including our lives would translate in to us being slaves... but we are not... we have been given free will... so although He knows the end.... He will not dictate every minute of our lives.... we are supposed to be His hands and feet in this world... taking care and serving others ahead of our own needs.... but we rebel... and serve ourselves....

As for a creator who made us to follow Him... why not... what greater glory and joy would there be in creating consciousness in one's own image... one that He would love, cherish and wish to be part of.... as human parents do with their own children.... why is that so hard to believe?.....And as human parents feel when they see their children rebel and do foolish things.... why would it surprise you that God would wish to reconcile us to Him after we recognized His love and grace as supreme, after going astray....  What greater love is their than to tell us... if only we recognize and believe in Him... we will be given forgiveness and salvation?That is called love...... willing to sacrifice all.... so we can be with Him for eternity....May I suggest CS Lewis's Mere Christianity... He too was an atheist... but felt their was a greater purpose.... His search led to the cross.....

I listen to this song every morning before school. I love it! This in some cases was me, because over all I have had a good life, I have loved the lord in church and not until I started playing guitar a few years ago and prayed to God for his eyes. I had to say "Lord I will go for you" and once I made that my prayer I had begun to see others through the eyes of God and it became more than just "population me." People put on a happy face sometimes, we have to look past that at the bigger picture.
