You Live in a Fabricated World
Matthew Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Your dead eyes
Failing to see
Ignoring life
cll the little things
You might be young now
But the universe won't wait

cnd I gotta say
I don't think
You live in the real world
Ears like lead
Deaf to what you heard
So absurd
You're driving me up the wall
Yeah

Can't wrap your head around
Common sense lost not found
You won't find a life in the tv

Living in filth
Mediocrity
Falling behind
Society
She might be fine now
But she won't be one day

cnd I gotta say
I don't think
You live in the real world
Ears like lead
Deaf to what you heard
So absurd
You're driving me up the wall

(I don't think)
You can understand
(I don't think)
You get what's at hand
(I don't think)
You got other plans
(I don't think)
You will be a man
(I don't think)
You can understand
(I don't think)
You get what's at hand
(I don't think)
You got other plans
(I don't think)
You will be a man

(I don't think so)
You will be a man?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Matthew's song "You Live in a Fabricated World" delve into themes of disillusionment, societal disconnect, and the struggle to find authenticity amidst a world filled with distractions and superficiality. The opening lines paint a picture of someone with "dead eyes," failing to truly see and appreciate the beauty and significance of life's little moments. This individual, though young, is portrayed as being out of touch with the urgency and preciousness of time within the vast universe.

The singer expresses frustration and concern towards this person, suggesting that they exist in a state of detachment from reality, as indicated by their metaphorical "ears like lead" that are deaf to meaningful experiences and insights. The repetition of "I don't think you live in the real world" underscores the disconnect between the individual's perception and the authentic, grounded existence that the singer believes they are missing out on. The reference to being "driven up the wall" alludes to the exasperation felt when witnessing someone trapped in a fabricated reality of their own making.

The lyrics further highlight a sense of decay and stagnation in the person's life, characterized by "living in filth" and embracing mediocrity while falling behind the expectations of society. The singer forewarns that despite the individual appearing content in the present, there will come a day when this facade crumbles, and they are forced to confront the consequences of their detachment from reality. The repeated refrain of "I don't think you live in the real world" serves as a poignant reminder of the singer's doubts about the person's ability to break free from their self-imposed limitations.

The closing lines introduce a series of reflections and uncertainties about the person's future and their capacity to mature into a responsible and self-aware individual. The questioning tone, coupled with the repeated assertions of doubt, suggests a lament for the potential squandered by the individual's refusal to engage with the complexities and challenges of genuine human experience. Ultimately, "You Live in a Fabricated World" serves as a poignant commentary on the pervasive allure of escapism and superficiality in modern society, urging listeners to strive for a more authentic and purposeful existence.

I believe anything of value
is worth whatever it takes .
A McDonald’s wrapper
blowing by as you walk
down the street-
is not really worth looking into...

But the free gift of eternal life?
just might be worth a little effort

I wish people would stop criticizing this song. The purpose of it is admitting to living in your "own little world", and asking God to bring you out of it, and showing you the bigger picture in life, and your full potential. To start considering things beside yourself. It's honestly opened my eyes to so many things.

I've recently expanded my own little world, it's been slowly growing and growing. I have to say my day to day level of joy has grown as well. It's happier outside of your own little world.

When I fall deep into depression & become so consumed in my own darkness, this song helps bring me back to a place of compassion.
