Suburbia
Matthew Good Lyrics

You can be art when we melt
And I will know what you were for
I say we're leaving
There ain't nothing here at all
Another day, a week, the mall
And baby if I was in demand
You would be mine
Someday, this place is gonna burn
Is your whole life in there waiting?
Someday, your head is gonna turn
And you'll realize I'm missing
Do you realize?
You will come back, convince yourself
You can stay alive and wait for me
And I will know what this was for
And I'll say we're leaving
There ain't nothing here at all
Another month, a year, that's all
So you can tell them I'm coming and
Hell's coming with me
Hell's coming with me
Someday, this place is gonna burn
Is your whole life in there waiting?
Someday, their heads are gonna turn
And they'll realize, they'll realize
They'll realize
You're missing
Matthew Good's song "Suburbia" is a portrayal of a life of monotony and loneliness. The lyrics suggest that the singer is living in suburbia and is yearning for something more. The opening line, "You will come back within yourself", indicates that the singer is aware that there is more to life than what they currently have, and they must find it within themselves. "You can be art when we melt" is a representation of the idea that when people come together, they can create something beautiful.
The singer then makes a statement about leaving because there is nothing left in suburbia for them. They say, "There ain't nothing here at all, another day, a week, the mall." This shows that the singer's life is so boring and uneventful that the only place they can go is the mall. The singer then goes on to say that if they were in demand, the person they are speaking to would be theirs. This line shows the singer's loneliness and need for companionship.
The chorus of the song is poignant, with the repetitions of the lines "Someday, this place is gonna burn, is your whole life in there waiting?" The singer is suggesting that the only thing that might shake up their humdrum life is a disaster, which is a bleak view of life. The chorus then moves into talking about the missing the singer's love interest. The final line of the song, "You're missing," shows that the singer's life is aching for something more.
