It was during his first year of college, that Matthew began playing guitar and writing songs. By Matthew's senior year, he was playing at every venue imaginable, from Fraternity houses to churches, and youth groups.
He signed an exclusive songwriting deal only a week after graduating and making the move to Nashville. His songs have been recorded by various artists including Rachel Lampa's most recent single, "Savior Song," which was Matthew's first top-5 song as a writer. Some other highlights were having songs placed on the platinum selling WoW 2002 project and also having his song, "Heart of Every Man recorded for the World Youth Day 2000 official soundtrack.
Matthew continued pursuing his dream of singing his own songs. Matthew had the opportunity to travel to universities across the country, and quickly began building up a steady following. With the help of Word Music and Extreme Writers Group, Matthew recorded an independent CD called, "Sellout," which caught the attention of Universal South Records.
Since signing with Universal South, He has released several albums, starting with "Happy" in 2003, "History" in 2005, and "Something to Say" in 2007; along with the re-release of Sellout in 2006. Can't believe it's time to do it over again
Yesterday, it took all that you had
And you're wonderin' if you'll ever get it back
But the whole wide world is waiting for
Waiting for you to step out that door
Come on, and let your life be heard today
If you're livin', if you're breathin'
You got something to say
And you know if your heart is beatin'
You got something to say
And no one can say it like you do
God is love and love speaks through you
Got it, you got it
You got something to say
Yeah, yeah
Something to say
Yeah, oh
Listen up, I got a question here
Would anybody miss you if you disappeared?
Well, your life is the song that you sing
And the whole wide world is listening
Well, the answer to the question is
You were created, your life is a gift
And the lights are shining on you today
Cause you got something to say
If you're livin', if you're breathin'
You got something to say
And you know if your heart is beatin'
You got something to say
And no one can say it like you do
God is love and love speaks through you
Got it, you got it
You got something to say, yeah
(Sing na, na, na, na, na, na)
You got something to say
(Na, na, na, na, na, na)
Come on, come on, yeah
Sing na, na, na, na, na, na
Na, na, na, na, na, na
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, yeah
Listen up, I got a question here
Would anybody miss you if you disappeared?
Well, your life is the song that you sing
And the whole wide world is listening
Oh, you got something to say
And no one can say it like you do
God is love and love speaks through you
Got it, you got it
You got something to say, yeah
(Na, na, na, na, na, na)
Something to say
(Na, na, na, na, na, na)
Come on, come on, yeah
(Na, na, na, na, na, na)
And the world is listening now
(Na, na, na, na, na, na)
And the lights are shining down
(Na, na, na, na, na, na)
Shining down on you today
Cause you got something to say
So just say it
In Matthew West's song "Something to Say," he encourages his listeners to step out of their comfort zones and speak up because everyone has a unique story to tell that the world is waiting to hear. He starts with a morning scene where someone is feeling exhausted after a difficult yesterday but must start anew today. However, West insists that despite feeling drained, you still have something to offer. The song's central theme emphasizes that no one can replace your voice, story, and perspective. West infers that everyone's song, message, or calling has value, and the world needs to hear it.
The next verse poses a profound question: would anyone miss you if you disappeared? It's like asking if you've made a difference in the world. Through this question, West is urging people to be conscious of the fact that the world is watching and listening to what they do and say, and everyone has an impact. He then reminds his listeners that their lives are a gift to sing, to live, and to impact others. The song concludes with the same message that you have something to offer and encourages the audience, saying, "So just say it."
