Sunshine
Maude Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Some have lost it now.
Some wants it back.
Everyone would rather sing about darkness.
Well, i guess we all feel like it′s never here.

We only differ in the way we beg for sunshine.
We only differ in the way we beg for sunshine.
Where's not to go?
What is it not to try?
I hear them kill for brighter kind of light.
Well, i guess we all feel like it′s never here.

We only differ in the way we beg for sunshine.
We only differ in the way we beg for sunshine.

What's wrong with falsehood?
We all believe, anyway.
Truth is useless.
We're all slaves of what we say.
I hear different voices.
One thing′s clear.
We all feel like it′s never here.

We only differ in the way we beg for sunshine.
We only differ in the way we beg for sunshine.

We all feel like it's never here.
Why still i wonder "What are they fighting for?"

Overall Meaning

The song "Sunshine" by Maude is a poignant commentary on the human condition. The opening lines, "Some have lost it now. Some want it back," refer to the elusive and fleeting nature of happiness and joy. The following line, "Everyone would rather sing about darkness," suggests that society is often more comfortable dwelling in a negative or pessimistic mindset rather than embracing positivity. Through this contrast, Maude notes how it can be difficult to find happiness in a world that is struggling with its own sense of joy.

The chorus "We only differ in the way we beg for sunshine" highlights the fact that everyone seeks happiness, but we each have our own way of obtaining it. Maude seems to be stating that while people may have differing opinions, beliefs, and values, we all fundamentally desire the same thing - to find joy and contentment in life.

The idea of the search for happiness carries throughout the song. Maude references people "killing" for a brighter kind of light, a metaphor for how people may seem to go to extreme lengths to find happiness. She also touches on the idea that truth may be useless when it comes to finding happiness, and that everyone is a slave to their own words and beliefs. The closing line, "Why still I wonder 'What are they fighting for?'" suggests that even in the face of universal commonality, people still find reasons to fight each other.

@Mad Hatter Lady Capulet:
Marry, my child, early next Thursday morn,
The gallant, young and noble gentleman,
The County Paris, at Saint Peter's Church,
Shall happily make thee there a joyful bride.

Juliet:
Now, by Saint Peter's Church and Peter too,
He shall not make me there a joyful bride.

I like how she still tests to see if it really was a fake knife before trying it too.

That's the best part!!

Mad Hatter

Oh, Harold, why didn't you keep this one, she was marvelous!

RaymondHng

@Mad Hatter And I'm saying that Harold has a helicopter mom who enrolled him in a dating service without consulting him and answered the dating questions according to her own thoughts and feelings without consulting him and took away his car and replaced it without consulting him. Therefore, he will do whatever it takes to keep Candy Gulf, Edith Phern, and Sunshine Doré out of his social circle.

Mad Hatter

@RaymondHng Dude, I was just saying I liked this girl. Whatever mommy issues you’re bringing to the table is your cross to bear.

RaymondHng

@Mad Hatter Obviously, Harold's heart points elsewhere. He liked going to funerals and he met someone who liked going to funerals as much as he does.

Also, when one and their parents are of different minds and of different worlds, it is highly unlikely one will have a romantic interest in someone that their parents pick out for them. If I don't even like the shoes that my mother has been picking out for me from some discount place, there is no way in hell that she can ever introduce me to anyone that I would have a romantic interest. She is an example of why arranged marriages do not work.

Mad Hatter

@RaymondHng Point being, the heart wants what the heart wants, regardless of how you met them. If your parents introduce you to someone, and you decide you like them, what's the problem?

I love this scene because to me it leaves it open ended as to if he liked that girl or ever saw her again. But it proved that he could have a life and a relationship with a woman his own age after Maude. But Maude was imperative to his journey because she made him realize he could have a relationship and love in the first place.

@Grayson Davenport I like to think he did too 😊
