Wasting time
Try to hold it all inside
For just one night
Top of the world
I'm sitting here wishing
The things I've become
That something is missing
But what do I know
On my own
On my own
Now it seems that I have found
Nothing at all
Wanna hear your voice out loud
Slow it down slow it down
Without it all
I'm choking on nothing
It's clear in my head
I'm screaming for something
Knowing nothing is better than knowing at all
On my own
I'm on my own
I'm on my own
I'm on my own
Go
I'm on my own
I'm on my own
Top of the world
Sitting here wishing
The things I've become
Something is missing
Knowing nothing is better than knowing it all
Yeah-ah
On my own
On my own
On my own
On my own
The opening line of McFly's "On My Own" is a commentary on the detachment and apathy of modern society, with people "wasting time" and "holding it all inside" in order to avoid confronting their emotions. The singer, however, seems to be trapped in their thoughts and unable to escape the feelings of isolation and emptiness that come from being disconnected from others. Despite being "on top of the world," they are "wishing" for something more, and questioning the choices that have brought them to this point. The repetition of the phrase "on my own" serves as a reminder of their solitude and inability to connect with others.
As the song progresses, the singer becomes more desperate, yearning to "hear [a] voice out loud" and "screaming for something." The realization that they have "found nothing at all" is a disturbing one, leaving them feeling like they are choking on their own thoughts and emotions. The line "knowing nothing is better than knowing it all" suggests that the singer is grappling with the burden of knowledge and understanding, recognizing that sometimes the truth can be painful and that ignorance can provide a kind of sanctuary.
Overall, "On My Own" presents a bleak and haunting portrayal of the human condition, capturing the sense of isolation and longing that can come from feeling disconnected from others.
