After many years of touring, the band began to accumulate a large fanbase. It was around this time, in 2005, that original bassist Blair Roberts quit to pursue a family. He was replaced by Dylan Johnstone(formerly of Yorkton, SK hardcore group Statement of Service). They remained a 3-piece until mid 2006 when Todd joined so Dylan could switch to lead vocals. This era of the band saw them switch to a straight up Metalcore sound ispired by Shai Hulud and Misery Signals. The group toured in the US and Canada constantly, and was featured in the June 2007 issue of Alternative Press magazine as well as multiple other publications. Their 2007 album, Sending You Strength, was released in the US on Facedown Record.
Their latest record, To Keep Me From Sinking, was well received and let this band drop of the scene gracefully and happily after this final album
Means disbanded after a series of farewell shows in select Canadian cities as well as a few US cities.
They played their final show to a sold-out crowd at the Riddell Centre in the University of Regina on November 28, 2008. If you want to hear the new band that the lead singer is in, check out the band Continuance
What We Seek
Means Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The best lack conviction and the worst are full of passion
Until a moment of hope or a moment of defeat
When we are standing on our own, we're on our own
What do we want to happen now
When the center cannot hold and we are left out
So what will lead our steps
What we are striving for
We are the restless
We are set apart from the dead, only dying now
We are known by what we seek
When the center cannot hold
Is it the drug or the soberness?
The failure that we feel inside when nothing seems to shine
So what do we want to happen now
If we are on our own and we are left out
If we are left out
So what will lead our steps
The very thing we seek
What we are striving for
We are the restless
We are set apart from the dead, only dying now
And we are known by what we seek
When the center cannot hold
When the center cannot hold is there anything left
I think we need to simplify it
And if when we forget
We can't find our way
We are known by what we seek
When the center cannot hold
The lyrics of Means's song "What We Seek" are profound and reflective. The lines "Nothing seems to shine when things fall apart, the best lack conviction and the worst are full of passion" highlights a sense of disillusionment and the lack of direction that individuals face during moments of crisis. The lines "when we are standing on our own, we're on our own" speak to the loneliness that accompanies these moments of hopelessness.
The chorus of the song poses a rhetorical question "What do we want to happen now, when the center cannot hold, and we are left out?" This line speaks to the universal experience of feeling lost and disconnected from oneself when everything seems to be falling apart. The lines that follow, "So what will lead our steps, the very thing we seek, what we are striving for" shed light on the importance of self-discovery and the search for meaning during these difficult moments.
The verses of the song highlight the restlessness and sense of isolation that accompanies moments of crisis. The lines "we are set apart from the dead, only dying now" and "we are known by what we seek when the center cannot hold" underscore the importance of introspection during these times of uncertainty.
Overall, "What We Seek" is a powerful and introspective song that encourages individuals to look within themselves during moments of crisis to find the strength and resilience to keep moving forward.
