Born on the 2nd February 1985 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Gardot took up piano and played as a youngster on the nightclub scene of Philadelphia, influenced by jazz, folk, rock, and pop musics. At the age of nineteen she was a fashion student at the Community College of Philadelphia. While cycling in Philadelphia in November 2003 she was hit by a car whose driver had ignored a red traffic light. In the accident she suffered serious head and spinal injuries, and her pelvis was broken in two places. Because of these severe injuries she was confined to her hospital bed for a year. Her musical beginning was prompted by a tending physician who was concerned with her cognitive impairment as a result of head injury sustained in the accident. He believed that music would help her brain injury improve, as it has been known to show remarkable results in improving people's cognitive ability after such trauma.
Following her doctor's suggestion, Gardot made recordings bedside, while still unable to walk, and eventually released the works as an EP: Some Lessons: The Bedroom Sessions (2005). Gardot's desire to be well, combined with a bit of luck, brought her to the attention of a local radio DJ at the AAA station WXPN (known for launching the careers of artists such as Amos Lee and Norah Jones). Her cognitive powers slowly but surely became pronounced, leading to the independent recording and release of her debut CD, Worrisome Heart, which was reissued in 2007 by Verve records.
Gardot is hypersensitive to light and noise, so wears dark glasses; she also uses a cane to walk. Onstage she requires a special seating unit, and wears a Transcutaneous Electro-Nerve Stimulator, a TENS device, to assist in alleviating her neuralgic muscle pain. Though touring is difficult, she has been performing in major cities on the East Coast of the U.S. to support her recordings. In 2009, working with producer Larry Klein and arranger Vince Mendoza - both known for their work with Joni Mitchell - Gardot followed up her Verve debut with My One and Only Thrill.
In 2012, she released the album The Absence.

We've travelled on
It makes me smile
Although I do tend to forget
Your cadent eyes
After a while
Another dream begins to fray
Another sun sets in the blue
Oh my love, what can we do
To stop it all?
When I look back on all the tears
That you've shed
I wonder why
You can't consider all the years
That lie ahead of you and I
Another dream begins to fray
So my love, another day
Another sun sets in the blue
Oh my love, what can we do
To stop it all?
Another dream begins to die
So my love, another time
Another sun sets in the blue
So my love, what can we do
To stop it all?
These lyrics from Melody Gardot's song Sunset In The Blue speak about reflecting on the past and the inevitability of change. The first verse describes looking back on the journey that the singer and their partner have taken together, and although it may have been difficult, it brings a smile to their face. However, as time passes, the intensity of the memories fades, to the point where they forget the details of their partner's eyes. The chorus brings up the idea of how each day ends, with the setting of the sun, and how powerless they feel to stop time from moving forward, asking "Oh my love, what can we do to stop it all?". The second verse shifts the focus to the partner, and the tears that they have shed. The singer wonders why their partner can't consider all the years ahead of them, instead of dwelling on the past. The final chorus reinforces the idea that dreams will inevitably die, time will continue to move forward, and that some things are beyond our control.
Overall, these lyrics are a poignant and contemplative take on the transience of life and love, and how we can struggle to hold on to those things that are most important to us, even as they slip away.

Wow - I don't drink but this makes me want to be in an elegant 1950s nightclub at 2 AM with the lights low and Melody and her combo on stage oozing this gorgeously melancholy mood....

The word for what this song makes me feel is "saudade." "Sunset in the Blue" is permeated by loss and regret. Gorgeous music in some many ways...and perfectly recorded.
