Simply love it! Yes please continue the monster fish series. I really like both the nano and monster fish. I tend to like extremes myself. Have a nano fresh and saltwater tank. thinking going big, but not sure. Trying to decide between monster or larger planted tank with co2 and a lot of nano fish. hmm....

Question....how do you keep the algae from clogging your filter intakes? And I agree, these gars can live a VERY long time. There are large aquariums back in my home state of Missouri (think old time river restaurants that have some massive and old gars. Not to mention this legendary snapping turtle!

Gar are my favorite native fish I fell most predatory fish should get at least some form of live food but I find Gar to be more of an opportunistic scavengers than active feeding predator so it would be much less important

They get earthworms, but I don't feed them feeders. They are occasionally also on cull patrol, but most of the tiny fish fly under their radar and dont' really register as food.

We had some A.tropicus in germany at the beginning of this year, the price was about 250€ for a 30cm, i think they were bred in asia(i actually thought about buying one, but they get just to big)

Awesome fish! I'd be interested in knowing how much one can expect to spend per month on foodstuffs if we were to feed them a similar diet as you do (i.e., how much do you spend on food per month?) for these MONSTER edition species spotlights. I'm setting up a 135 that's going to house 8 ropefish by the end of the month, and with ropefish being a bit less intensive with foodstuffs than gars (from my understanding at least, I could be wrong) I'm super interested in knowing how much some of these other MONSTER fish eat

+Jacob “GreenGo” Green a lot. Cost depends on what you are feeding. I buy in bulk, and am not sure what the expense is really but I would guess less than $20 a month which is way less than my cat food

Hello Rachel I really love your videos and you are very informative. With that said I need a little advice. I have a 4 inch Florida gar and it has been about two weeks and he will not eat! I offered pellets, shrimp, tilapia, small live insects floating on top, blood worms, and feeders. He will show interest for a second then not care. He floats near the top with his mouth hanging open and I can easily pick him up and not even care. Any advice would be appreciated it. In the next week or two he will be in a 6x2x2. Right now in a 33 long with lots of plants. I'm worried he will be stunted from not eating.

Did you remove some of the algae or did it die back naturally. The tank looked really awesome when it was covering almost every surface.

It comes and goes sometimes. I added extra light lately, mainly to shoot these videos (and left it), and the algae seems to be retreating. We will see what happens. Growing bba is not really a very exact science.

Monster fish and nano fish... Both ends of the spectrum. At least you don't have a 4' red tailed catfish in a 2000 gallon tank. That's on the Dino level. I liked the oscar one in particular because a lot of people have those fish and it's cool to see some big boys too.

keep the monsters coming. and as far as the algae it may not be everyone's liking. but the fish don't mind. But wouldn't coloring the sides and back be effective to stop the darting behavior of the gar's . that way you could go acrylic panels on the tank you move them into eventually. and it would display them better. well in my opinion.

MY DAD A PPROVES A MONSTER TANK !!! I will not be getting tropical or cubads, i will be getting spotted/florida , whichever i can get bc the care is basically the same. I would prefer shortnose but i cant find anything on it. I will stock 3 spotted, 2 peacocks, and i haven't decided on bottom feeders but candidates are: saddled bichir ( i love your bichirs!!!) , Tiger Shovel nose, red tail cat. This tank will be 7x3x3 , 471 gallons. Whats your opinion on the matter? bottom feeder ideas need to be hardy

Tropical gars or even shortnose gars are more suitable for home aquariums and look almost like alligator gars. But you still need a pretty big aquarium.
