Finding his voice in a school choir, Crawford began his professional career still a teenager. Having some luck on the London stage in the early 60s, he then found his way onto the BBC and starred in various programmes such as 'Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em'. He also had film roles in 'The War Lover', 'A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum'. and 'How I Won the War' (which brought him into the same work as John Lennon).
Andrew Lloyd Webber's casting of him opposite Sarah Brightman and Steve Barton as the Phantom in 1986 shot his career into high gear. Winning a Tony Award for his role, Crawford also had the aforementioned tune, "The Music Of The Night", reach the British Top Ten. He has released several studio albums such as 'A Touch of Music in the Night' and 'On Eagle's Wings' among others.
Any Dream Will Do

To see for certain what I thought I knew.
Far far away, someone was weeping
But the world was sleeping
Any dream will do.
I wore my coat, with golden lining,
Bright colors shinging, wonderful and new.
And in the East, the dawn was breaking
Any dream will do.
Acrash of drums! A flash of light!
My golden coat flew outta sight!
The colors faded into darkness, I was left alone...
May I return to the beginning?
The light is dimming,
And the dream is too.
The world and I, we are still waking,
Still hesitating,
Any dream will do...
Still hesitating, Any dream will do.
The lyrics of Michael Crawford's song "Any Dream Will Do" invoke a sense of longing and hope for a better future through the power of dreams. The first verse describes the act of closing one's eyes and looking beyond what is immediately visible to find something that is "far away". The world may be sleeping and someone may be weeping, but dreams have the power to bring hope and positivity to any situation.
In the second verse, the singer puts on a coat with golden lining and bright colors, signifying a renewed sense of optimism and possibility. The dawn breaks in the East, symbolizing a new beginning for the world and the singer. However, as the verse progresses, there is a sudden crash of drums and a flash of light, which causes the golden coat to fade into darkness and leaves the singer feeling isolated and alone.
The final verse brings a sense of uncertainty as the light begins to dim and the dream fades. The world and the singer are still waking up and hesitating, unsure about what the future holds. Despite this uncertainty, the message is clear: any dream will do, and as long as there is hope and optimism, anything is possible.
