Hurts
Mika Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

How do we end up like this, under a burning sky?
Some things are better unsaid, it's easier to lie
I'm pulling but my heart is on the wire
Don't need a thousand guards to lock me in
Doesn't take a fool to start a fire
A solitary spark and wars begin

Say it's only words
And that it will get easier with time
Nothing's only words
That's how hearts gets hurt

I can't, I can't, I can't stop hearing
All the words we said
I can't stop hearing
All the words you said
I can't stop hearing
All the words you said
I can't stop hearing words
That's how hearts get hurt

How did it all come to this?
We started off as friends
It makes it easy to leave
If we're strangers by the end
I'm pulling but my heart is on the wire
Don't need a thousand guards to lock me in
Doesn't take a fool to start a fire
Solitary spark and wars begin

Say it's only words
And that it will get easier with time
Nothing's only words
That's how hearts gets hurt

I can't, I can't, I can't stop hearing
All the words we said
I can't stop hearing
All the words we said
I can't stop hearing
All the words we said
I can't stop hearing words
That's how hearts get hurt

You say it's only words
And that it will get easier with time
Nothing's only words
That's how hearts get hurt
You say it's only words
It doesn't matter if they're yours or mine
Nothing's only words
That's how hearts get hurt

I can't, I can't, I can't stop hearing
All the words we said
I can't stop hearing
All the words we said
I can't stop hearing
All the words we said

Let's stop using words
That's how hearts get hurt

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Mika's song "Hurts" highlights the complexity of human relationships and the power of words. The song starts with the question "How do we end up like this, under a burning sky?" which can be interpreted as a metaphor for the intensity of the conflict in the relationship. The next line "Some things are better unsaid, it's easier to lie" highlight the tendency to avoid confrontation and difficulty in speaking the truth in any relationship. The artist's heart is on the wire, indicating the emotional vulnerability he feels. He acknowledges that it doesn't take a thousand guards to lock him in and that wars can begin with a solitary spark. This reference is an allusion to how the smallest spark can ignite a massive fire, which in turn represents how small misunderstandings can escalate into serious fights.

The chorus part of the song, "Say it's only words, and that it will get easier with time, nothing's only words, that's how hearts get hurt," emphasizes the severity of the repercussions of words said in haste. No matter how small or unimportant these words might seem to some, they have the power to inflict emotional pain on others. The repeated lines, "I can't stop hearing all the words we said," highlights the lasting impact of hurtful words and how they can continue to echo in someone's mind long after they have been spoken.

In the second verse, the artist reflects on how a friendship once existed but has now devolved into conflict. The line "It makes it easy to leave, if we're strangers by the end" is a sad reminder that once love is lost, it's hard to reclaim it. The conclusion of the song, "Let's stop using words. That's how hearts get hurt," is a powerful plea to end the hurtful words and let actions speak.

I don't understand why someone like Mika doesn't get more attention in the world? Listen to his songs..this guy has so much to offer through his music. I'm so proud I could see him perform live. Thank you Mika! :)

@vgamador

I know right?!! And wow your so lucky :'0

@2296chiara

It' sadly true that he doesn't get the big attention of media like other singers or artists in general. But luckily he has a lot of true fans all over the world, who support and love him, and I think this is enough for him, because he is not the kind of person who wants to be famous and rich, he sings because he has a great passion and talent to share with people.

I love how Mika can combine music that is pretty "dancy" and easy on the ear with meaningful lyrics.

@alejandradolinczuk7485

Why is he so fu***ing underrated?? He's so talented, sweet, pure, I can't imagine him to be doing anything mean. I love his tenderness towards his dogs. I love he has put/used his face and fame to help raise funds to kids with cancer orgs., etc. What's not to love about him?
