Dear Old Stockholm
Miles Davis Quintet Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Dear old Southland I hear you calling me.
And I long how I long to roam
back to my old Kentucky home.
Dear old Southland for you my heart is yearning
And I long just to see once more

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Miles Davis Quintet's song "Dear Old Stockholm" are a reflection of a nostalgic feeling towards a place of his past, specifically the "old Southland" and "old Kentucky home." He expresses a yearning to revisit the place that he once called home. The song is an ode to the beauty and serenity of the Southern United States, and a longing to not only physically be there, but also to feel the emotions and memories associated with it.

The lyrics are not only a reflection of personal nostalgia, but also a reflection of larger themes such as homesickness and the desire to return to a simpler time. The repetition of the word "dear" adds to the sentimental tone, as if he is speaking to an old friend or lover. The overall mood of the song can be described as melancholic, yet soothing, as if Davis is finding comfort in the memories of his past.

Jazz at its highest level. Greatest jazz quintet of all times. Miles is cool, Red Garland and the Paul Chambers solo is perfect set up for Coltrane's solo. This is the Coltrane I like best: passionate and articulate yet restrained and lyrical. This is certainly some of the greatest art kind produced in the 20th Century.

Philly Joe Jones plays just about perfectly here. The way drums should be played.

P.C. plays with such drive and momentum, and what drummer except maybe Max Roach could play like Philly does here. Great, great performance.
