All of You
Miles Davis Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I love the looks of you, the lure of you
The sweet of you and the pure of you
The eyes, the arms and the mouth of you
The east, west, north and the south of you
I'd love to gain complete control of you
Handle even the heart and soul of you
Love at least a small percent of me do
Because I love all of you
I love the looks of you, the lure of you
The sweet of you and the pure of you
The eyes, arms and the mouth of you
The east, west, north and that south of you
I'd love to gain complete control of you
And handle even the heart and soul of you
Love at least a small percent of me do

Because I, I love all of you
[Incomprehensible]

Overall Meaning

In Miles Davis's song "All of You," the singer expresses his deep love for a person, admiring everything about them from their physical features to their inner qualities. The lyrics describe the singer's desire to possess and control this person, yet also suggests a plea for reciprocated love. The use of repetition in the verses emphasizes the intensity of the singer's emotions, as he repeatedly lists each feature he adores.

The chorus acts as a sort of refrain, with the singer again stating his love for everything about this person, and even asking for just a small percentage of love in return. The repeated phrase "I love all of you" is both powerful and vulnerable, capturing the complexity of love and the human experience of wanting to be loved in return. One could interpret the song as a poetic representation of the intense feelings one experiences in a new love affair, or even as a commentary on the human desire for control and possession in relationships.

One of my favorite albums, everything is so perfect. I could just watch the album cover and be sent to somewhere. Miles brings out the best of his colleagues, his audiences. A true virtuoso, never stopped pushing himself until he literally couldn’t do it anymore.
