Distant Honor
Miracle of Sound Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Distant honor, wasted grace
Twisted pawn a face replaced
Phantom filter mask of dread
Damn the guilt my past is dead

And I wait for the night
Shadows protect my
Angel in white
Time to eject these
Vain parasites
Cast out reject the
Plague in all your hearts

Cause the sad sad faces of the weary and worn
Live in bad bad places that are dreary and torn
And a distant honor calls me to your side
To be your guide

Wrapped up in your velvet sheets
Far above the hellish streets you're
Strapped inside your wealthy keeps
Piss on corners where we sleep

And this town's paranoid
Blinking and jumping
Down in the void
A sickening dumping
Ground to avoid
The stink of the pumping
Plague in all your hearts

Cause the sad sad faces of the weary and worn
Live in bad bad places that are dreary and torn
And a distant honor calls me to your side
To be your guide

Shades of the whales in the tainted deep
Maimed and impaled in their pain they sleep
The faded and frail in the laneways weep
Broken souls in mourning

And the sad sad faces of the weary and worn
Live in bad bad places that are dreary and torn
And a distant honor calls me to your side
To be your guide
On rooftops hide
Be your guide

Shades of the whales in the painted deep
Maimed and impaled in their pain they sleep

The faded and frail in the laneways weep
Broken souls in mourning

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Miracle Of Sound's song Distant Honor depict the struggles and hardships of people who are forgotten and neglected by society. The opening lines of the song, "Distant honor, wasted grace, twisted pawn a face replaced, Phantom filter mask of dread, Damn the guilt my past is dead," suggest feelings of loss, hopelessness, and guilt. The singer of the song is someone who has been discarded by society and has lost all sense of purpose. However, he remains hopeful of a better tomorrow, seeking solace in the shadows of the night where he finds protection and comfort. In this 'safe space,' he waits for his guardian angel in white, whom he sees as his guide to a better life.

The song also delves into the theme of social inequality and the divide between the rich and the poor. The second verse describes the contrast between the wealthy who live in comfort and luxury and the poor who sleep on the streets. The singer sees this divide as a source of paranoia and anxiety. The imagery in the lyrics - "Shades of the whales in the tainted deep, Maimed and impaled in their pain they sleep, The faded and frail in the laneways weep, Broken souls in mourning" - further reinforces the sense of despair and hopelessness.

You know what I find funny? This game took concepts from Thief and Bioshock to create something original, stylish, and fun, and now Thief and Bioshock are both taking cues from Dishonored. Talk about the student becoming the master, huh? Really good song, by the way.

I think that's a real nice touch as well.

Derpy Hooves

I know, right? It's amazing.

Every game developer should take cues from the best games in the genre, and then improve upon that to the best of their ability. Unfortunately, many don't care enough to bother, many more think taking cues means copy almost exactly without even bothering to try and improve, and the rest that actually do care enough to do so typically don't have the resources to make it happen.

It's wonderful how Dishonored have become such an amazing game! (though they could use some more work on the characters).

If you do multiple playthroughs and interact with people while at the Hound Pits, you'll see that Emily actually changes a lot, but it depends on how you play. Without her mother, Corvo is who she really looks up to above anyone else, so your action mold her. On high chaos, Calista at one confides in you that she thinks you're bad influence, that Emily is becoming a scary, mean, cruel child, especially when you're around.

miracleofsound

That's the whole point. The song is from Corvo's point of view as he tries to keep Emily innocent despite all the horror happening around her, hence the child like quality to the music.
