Both of her parents are private investigators, but father Rick is also a country guitarist and songwriter. Lambert became seriously interested in country music after attending a Garth Brooks concert as a young girl, and soon began singing in talent contests under the tutelage of her father.
At 16, Miranda began appearing on the Johnny High Country Music Review in Arlington, Texas, the same show that helped launch the career of LeAnn Rimes. Miranda quickly landed a recording session in Nashville, but left the studio in tears after she became frustrated with the "pop" sound of music that was not her own. Upon returning to Texas, Miranda began writing songs and taking guitar lessons from her father.
When Miranda's aptitude for music became apparent, her parents encouraged her to aggressively pursue singing and acting opportunities. While still a high school student, Miranda made her professional singing debut and fronted the house band at the Reo Palm Isle Ballroom in Longview, Texas, a long-running venue that has showcased Elvis Presley and Willie Nelson.
Foregoing college, Miranda performed throughout Texas in 2001 and 2002. She finished first in the Texas auditions for Nashville Star and eventually placed third on the national competition.

With every word that you say
Excuses for the answers that you lack
Your mama's still the steady ground you walk on every day
And your daddy's still the monkey on your back
Did you find all you thought you'd find out in the wild, wild west
You took a little piece of home and you threw away the rest
Too scared to hold the hand that wants to help you up
Are you the man you thought you'd be by the time that you turned thrity three
Are you still a bullet in your daddy's gun
Don't forget boy you're your mama's only son
She's at home and she's been praying for you
Hey what about Georgia
Saw your sister yesterday
Austin's five and on his way
Looking for some shoes that he can fill
He said that he'd be just like you, the coolest guy he ever knew
And he'd find you when he lost his training wheels
I looked in his big blue eyes and I saw you again
He's hungry for a life that he ain't ready to begin
You say you're livin' on the edge and I think you're hangin' from a ledge
Too scared to hold the hand that wants to help you up
Are you the man you thought you'd be by the time that you turned thrity three
Are you still a bullet in your daddy's gun
Don't forget boy you're your mama's only son
She's at home and she's been praying for you
So what about Georgia
Guess you didn't realize it'd take you quite this long
To figure out that being free is right where you belong
You say you're livin' on the edge and I think you're hangin' from a ledge
Too scared to hold the hand that wants to help you up
Hey! Are you the man you thought you'd be by the time that you turned thirty three
Are you still a bullet in your daddy's gun
Don't forget boy you're your mama's only son
She's at home and she's been praying for you
Hey want about Georgia
What about Georgia, yeah
What about Georgia Georgia, yeah
What about Georgia
The lyrics of "What About Georgia?" by Miranda Lambert tell the story of someone who left his hometown to live on the edge, but is now questioning his choices. The singer, assuming to be an old friend or love interest, urges him to think about where he came from and the people who love and rely on him, especially his parents. They draw a parallel of him being a monkey on his father's back and being his mother's only child, implying that he has a responsibility to them as well. They also mention his young nephew, who looks up to and wants to be just like him. The singer is telling him that he needs to start making decisions for himself and figure out where he truly belongs.
The song speaks to the idea of identity and finding oneself. The singer has left his hometown in search of something but now seems lost and doesn't know where he belongs. The lyrics urge him to remember where he came from and that he has a responsibility to the people who love him. It also touches on the idea of generational trauma and how the actions of one generation can affect the next.

Arguably, more songs were written about Georgia than any other US state : Rainy Nights in Georgia, Georgia on my Mind, Georgia Peaches, Georgia Rose and off course Georgia Rain and What About Georgia, just to name a few . Who agrees? God Bless Georgia.
