Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Give Us Our Land" by Miriam Makeba speak to the struggles and aspirations of the Black African community. The first verse, "Thina sizwe esintsundu, sikhalela izwe lethu," translates to "We, the black nation, are crying out for our land." This represents a plea for the restoration of land and resources that were forcibly taken from them through colonization and apartheid in South Africa.

The second verse, "Elathathwa ngabamhlophe," translates to "taken by the white people," further emphasizing the systemic oppression and theft that Black Africans faced. Makeba sings this verse twice, driving home the point that this injustice has been perpetuated for too long.

The repetition of "Mabayeke umhlaba wethu" in the chorus means "leave our land alone" and is a call for the return of what was wrongly taken from them. The final verses repeat the same message, with "abantwana beAfrika" meaning "the children of Africa" and "bakhalela izwe labo" meaning "they are crying for their land." These lyrics express the unity and solidarity of Black Africans in their righteous fight for justice and equality.

In summary, "Give Us Our Land" is a powerful and poignant call for the restoration of the land and resources that were violently taken from Black Africans in South Africa. Through its repetition and message of unity, it speaks to the urgency and legitimacy of their cause.

on To Those We Love (Nongqongqo)

At the time the song was composed and released all the people mentioned ((Mangaliso) Sobukhwe, (Albert) Luthuli, (Nelson) Mandela, and (Walter) Sisulu were alive. While the three were in prison at Robben Island, Luthuli was not in prison, hence the question to Luthuli asking what "will you do?". Luthuli was the president of the banned African National Congress (ANC). Sobukhwe the president of Pan Africanist Congress (PAC). Mandela and Sisulu occupied executive leadership positions within the ANC at the time of their sentencing to serve life sentences in prison (1964). The same question is asked to all Africans.

on To Those We Love (Nongqongqo)

The lyrics of "To Those We Love" by Miriam Makeba are about the struggles, sacrifices, and resilience of great African leaders who fought for freedom, justice, and equality. The repetitive chorus, "Bahleli bonke entilongweni, Bahleli bonke kwaNongqongqo" refers to how all these leaders, including Sobukwe, Luthuli, Mandela, and Sisulu, are resting in peace or buried in their respective homes. The verses pose questions about their legacy and the continuation of their work, asking "Why, Baba Luthuli? What will you do?" and "What will happen to us, MaAfrica?" These questions are a call to action for listeners to carry on the struggle for freedom and justice.
