Gafnouhou
Mohamed Abdel Wahab Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Overall Meaning

The first verse of Mohamed Abdel Wahab's classic song "Gafnouhou" begins with the phrase "His eyelids knew the art of love," which immediately sets the tone for a lament about lost love. The following line, "And from that knowledge, there is death," suggests that the singer's love has been destructive and has caused pain and suffering. The next line, "So we burned our souls in a hell of kisses," reinforces this image of love as a dangerous and potentially deadly force.

The second verse continues to explore the theme of lost love, with the singer lamenting that "We pursued [love] endlessly, but it did not stay," and recalling dreams of "love, youth, flowers, dew, fun, and wine" that have now faded away. The third verse introduces a new idea, that of using alcohol as a way to temporarily escape the pain of lost love. The singer describes a "dose of madness" that can be obtained from a "cup of satisfaction," implying that alcohol can help ease the pain of heartbreak, at least for a little while.

The final verse of the song returns to the theme of lost love, with the singer addressing a former lover and saying, "Tell those who did not experience love that this is how love commands. If we have loved, then our excuse is that we had our eyes open." This suggests that, despite the pain and suffering caused by love, the singer would not trade the experience for anything, because it was a fundamental part of life.
