Tolerance
Monsoonsiren Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If your gaze defines me
I'll remain invisible
Invisible

Don't upbraid me
Don't "put up with me"

I'll take leave of my senses
Just for you, I'm on my fucking knees

Don't upbraid me
Don't "put up with me"

If I wasn't a part of your blood, of your bloodline
Would you love me the same?

I need you, don't just tolerate me
I need you, don't just "put up with me"

I need you, don't just tolerate me
I need you, don't just "put up with me"

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Monsoonsiren's song Tolerance delve into the struggle of feeling unseen and insignificant when someone's gaze defines and validates one's existence. The first line "If your gaze defines me, I'll remain invisible" suggests that the singer feels as though their identity only exists in the perception of others. They are grappling with the idea that their worth and value as a person is dependent on how others view them rather than their own innate qualities. The repetition of "invisible" reinforces this idea and highlights the singer's feeling of being overlooked and unseen.

The following lines "Don't upbraid me, don't put up with me" reveal that the singer is tired of feeling like a burden or someone who is just being tolerated. They want to be accepted and loved for who they are without feeling like they are being endured. The next two lines "I'll take leave of my senses, just for you, I'm on my fucking knees" show how far the singer is willing to go to gain acceptance and validation from others. They are willing to sacrifice their own sense of self and self-worth to please someone else.

The final lines "If I wasn't a part of your blood, of your bloodline, would you love me the same? I need you, don't just tolerate me" express the singer's fear of not being loved unconditionally. They wonder if their connection to someone is solely based on blood or lineage or if that person truly loves them for who they are. At the end of the day, the singer is pleading for acceptance and love from others without feeling invisible or like they are being "put up with".

Man, this song is so good, and so bittersweet for me. This song is the last one I'll see from sheep for 2 whole years, because tomorrow I'll be leaving to the Philippines on a church mission. I was never really a part of the community here(actually I think this is my first time commenting) but I've been listening to sheepy's music for about 2 years now, and being able to scroll through the comments and see all this positivity and love was always a highlight of my day. I want to share a story with you all. My grandma has severe dementia, to the point where she normally can't string a sentence together anymore. It's been really hard on my family, especially on my dad. One day she was visiting us, and I started practicing piano. After a while, grandma slowly walked down the stairs, sat on the couch behind me, and just listened. When I finished my song, which actually was Matilda by Oscar Schuster, a song I found on this channel, she spoke up and started telling me about her past. How she used to be a piano teacher in their little town, and taught my dad how to play. She talked for about 3 minutes, until her words became more jumbled and she went back to her usual self. My grandma ambled back upstairs, and I just sat down and cried. That experience showed me the real power and influence of music, and how it can truly change lives. I hope this wasn't too long and rambly, I just want to say that sheepy, you've changed my life and I'm so glad that you've given all of us these great songs and this wonderful community. I'll see you all in 2 years, and I can't wait to listen to all of the music I'll miss.😊

Jack Etcheverry went through the same thing with my grandma. we were very close, and seeing her like that shook me to the core. I didn't visit her the last few months of her life because i couldn't find the strength to face it. cherish those moments. good luck on your trip.
