Bruder Tod
Morgenstern Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴
Du vergisst mich nicht
Und zünde ist die Qual
Und die Kette bricht
Noch erscheinst du fern und fremd
Lieber
Bruder Tod, doch irgendwann
Nah und traut und ungeschminkt
Wirst du an mein Bettchen treten dann
These lyrics are from Morgenstern's song "Bruder Tod", which translates to "Brother Death". The song reflects on the inevitability of death and how it is something that will eventually come for everyone, regardless of how much we try to ignore it or distance ourselves from it. The first two lines, "Auch zu mir kommst du einmal / Du vergisst mich nicht" (roughly translated to "You will come to me someday too / You won't forget me") serve as a reminder that death will eventually come for the singer as well, and they cannot escape it forever. The next two lines, "Und zünde ist die Qual / Und die Kette bricht" (roughly translated to "And the pain is ignited / And the chain breaks"), speak to the release that comes with death, as it breaks the chains of suffering and pain.
The following lines, "Noch erscheinst du fern und fremd / Lieber Bruder Tod, doch irgendwann / Nah und traut und ungeschminkt / Wirst du an mein Bettchen treten dann" (roughly translated to "You still seem distant and unfamiliar / Dear Brother Death, but eventually / Close and familiar and unadorned / You will come to my bedside then") highlight the idea that death is something that seems far off and unknown, but eventually it will become a familiar presence for each of us. The lines express a certain amount of resignation and acceptance, acknowledging that death is an unavoidable part of the human experience.
