En mшrk horisont
Mortiis Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Jeg ser der borte mrke skoger.
Og jeg hrer triste stemmer grte.
Jeg ser fremtidens svarte skygger,
Danse for mine yne.
Jeg hrer tomheten i Ulvenes jakt-hul.
Og fler meg tilrugket - til det ukjente
Jeg ser en trist verden.
Jeg ser en mrk horisont.
[English translate: A dark horizon]
I see over there dark forests
And I hear sad voices cry
I see the black shadows of the future,
Dancing before my eyes
I hear the emptiness in the wolfs huntinghowl.
And I feel drawn - to the unknown

I see a sad world.
I see a dark horizon.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Mortiis's song En mшrk horisont paint a vivid picture of a desolate landscape, both physically and emotionally. The singer describes seeing dark forests in the distance, with mournful voices crying out. They see black shadows of the future dancing before their eyes, and hear the emptiness in the wolf's hunting howl. Despite feeling drawn to the unknown, there is an overwhelming sense of sadness and darkness pervading everything.

The references to nature, particularly the forest and the wolf, evoke a sense of primality and wildness. The singer is in tune with these natural elements, but also recognizes the darkness that can be found there, both in the physical surroundings and in their own emotions. The use of the word "horizon" suggests that this darkness extends far beyond their immediate surroundings, indicating a sense of hopelessness or despair that extends to the future.

Overall, En mшrk horisont is a powerful meditation on the contradictions and complexities of humanity's relationship with nature and our own inner selves. The descriptions of the natural world are imbued with a sense of melancholy and foreboding, but there is also a strong sense of connection and longing for something deeper.

Mortiis used to be so awesome. I remember listening to this stuff when I was about 13 and it was the most mysterious otherwordly thing. It's a shame I never got to see any era 1 stuff played live, too young for that, I just got The Smell of Rain tours. I never really liked any of the albums after that so much.

Iskalla I met him in 1998 and tell you he was a very cool person, dont look at all as on the pictures with his long nose and ears. It was already not more the early days but still memorable. Now its sucks totaly, I m very disapointed, but anyway. the old stuff is.... the spirit of black metal then...

Teemu Jaakkola

You're now in luck, since he's performing exactly this album live now days... ;)

This stuff was never meant to be played live. I have just attended his era 1 live show and it's only a small glimpse of the greatness what you feel while listening to the impeccable studio recording, sitting in your dark room at lonely and cold november night. But I showed up anyway to support the guy, who I've been appreciating for 16 years.
