Anything At All
Motion City Soundtrack Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Let's do this

I've been dying to hear what you're going through
I've been trying to find out what's up with you
There are too many secrets
This distance between you and me

You've been running around like you're bullet proof
On the brink of disaster, to tell the truth
And I'm far beyond worried
I miss you, I hope you're okay

Each time I try to say the things I try to say
You don't hear anything at all
You've pulled away from me in every single way
You don't hear anything at all

I've been waiting what feels an eternity
Hoping night after night you'll return to me
And retire from the madness and excess
This derelict scene

But the chances of that ever happening
Are a million to one and diminishing
There's as sadness I feel
When I think of all that could have been

Each time I try to say the things I try to say
You don't hear anything at all
You've pulled away from me in every single way
You don't hear anything at all

Each time I try to say the things I try to say
You don't hear anything at all

You've pulled away from me in every single way
You don't hear anything at all

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Motion City Soundtrack's "Anything at All" detail a sense of longing and confusion in a relationship. The singer is reaching out to someone they used to be close to but now feel distant from. The singer wonders about what the other person is going through, as they are keeping secrets and seem to be on the brink of disaster. The singer expresses their worry and feeling of loss, while also acknowledging their own inability to communicate with the other person. They feel like their attempts to reach out and say what they need to are falling on deaf ears. Despite their efforts, the other person has pulled away in every way and does not seem to hear anything the singer is trying to say.

The song is a poignant look at the complexities of relationships, particularly when they begin to falter. The lyrics capture the pain of loving someone who is pushing you away, and the frustration of being unable to connect with them. At the same time, the singer acknowledges their own inability to fully understand what the other person is going through.

Is it just me, or does MCS consistently write amazing opening tracks? Tracks that are fast paced, Kick ass and perfectly set up the album? Like Cambridge, Attractive Today, Fell In Love Without You, Worker Bee, and Circuits and Wires, and now this one.

Whit Whitley

+Ed Allison Yes! You are absolutely correct. :)

+rocknrollnobody Thanks, you do too! Today!

+Ed Allison Hate or love their music, take their album into context and they nail the opener and closer every time.

+Ed Allison Attractive today is my favorite of the bunch, but Worker Bee is damn close. This one may take the crown given more time though.

TheRealKaytlin

I've always jokingly said Motion City Soundtrack writes about my life because I connect so well to so many of their song's lyrics. Then I finally listen to their new album and the very first song describes my exact present situation almost word for word on a day when I was feeling particularly down about it. I dunno what this witchcraft is, but I like it. It's nice to not feel quite as alone.

TheRealKaytlin man, me too and I think it is really magical, makes u think stuff...

Dandy TV

You know, I get it now. This has a sound really similar to I Am The Movie. At first I kinda felt it was jarring but looking at this it really does feel like IATM's sibling and now I love it. Hope their current tour means our bois are back. They're the soundtrack to a broken heart.
