Shouting And Pointing
Mott Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I feel it deep in my bones
I can't avoid it, no way,
Gotta face it, not gonna be long
It's got me shouting, pointing,
panting, begging tonight
I need some people
To see me through it
Gonna pull some tarts together
Better dress them up in leather
Gonna find some kindred spirits
Gonna throw the searchlight in it
Want some volunteers!
You do and you do and you do
Get in to trouble
And maybe you do and you do and you do
Get in to luck
''cause I've been shouting, pointing, panting
And when it's done
We're gonna walk out smiling, laughing
Because we won!
Gonna pull... (etc)
Watch out, they'll get ya
They're hiding under your nose
They'll try to dare you, scare you, snare you
Stand on your toes
''cause they'll be shouting, pointing, panting
And when it's done
We're gonna settle down a-loving, and a-howling
Because we won
Gonna pull... (etc)
The lyrics of "Shouting and Pointing" by Mott the Hoople seem to be addressing some kind of impending danger or trouble that the singer feels in their bones. The lyrics suggest that the only way to face this looming threat is to gather together a group of like-minded people who will love and support each other through the difficulty. The verses also suggest an aggressive, defensive approach to the situation, using phrases like "pull some tarts together," "better dress them up in leather," and "stand on your toes." The chorus repeats the phrase "shouting, pointing, panting," which could suggest a frenzied response to the danger, as well as a call to action for the group of people gathering together.
Overall, the lyrics of "Shouting and Pointing" seem to be about coming together in the face of an uncertain future, with the hope that strength in numbers will help overcome the danger. The aggressive tone of the song could suggest that the danger is external, but it could also be interpreted as a call to action for the individuals within the group to stand up and fight for themselves and each other.

great track, shouting and pointing still sounds fresh today criminally overlooked at the time.

Though I have known about Drive On and Shouting and Pointing for decades, I had never heard these post Ian Hunter albums until now.
Verdict: Terrific stuff!
Mott didn't drop the ball, songwriting still strong and consistent.
*Always was intrigued by the Shouting and Pointing album cover, and Morgan Fisher's stance. Looked eccentric still with some of the Mott the Hoople attitude.
