You Look Certain
Mount Kimbie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Love gone, I've got trouble there, everything
Love gone, I've got trouble there, everything

Damning in the corner
Feeling like I don't need anyone
Losing my balance
Making problems out of whatever I see
I know when you gave me something
That you're hooked in on the feeling
Now I can get very twisted
At least don't give in just yet

You're better than I am
I stumble over what's in front of me
I am looking up at
Watching where I talk at people to within

Where I've been it's useless
Even talking about it
I'll talk if I want it
I need you not to turn your back on me

Love gone, I've got trouble there, everything
Love gone, I've got trouble there, everything

You look certain, I'm not so sure
You look certain, I'm not so sure
You look certain, I'm not so sure
You look certain, I'm not so sure
You look certain, I'm not so sure

You look certain, I'm not so sure
You look certain, I'm not so sure
You look certain, I'm not so sure
You look certain, I'm not so sure

You look certain, I'm not so sure
You look certain, I'm not so sure
You look certain, I'm not so sure
You look certain, I'm not so sure

You look certain, I'm not so sure
You look certain, I'm not so sure

You look certain, I'm not so sure
You look certain, I'm not so

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Mount Kimbie & Andrea Balency's song You Look Certain depict a person struggling to deal with the end of a love affair. The repetition of the phrase "Love gone, I've got trouble there, everything" reflects the sense of loss and confusion the person is experiencing. They feel like they're losing their balance and making problems out of anything they see. The repetition enhances the sense of desperation the person is feeling.

In the chorus, the lyrics "You look certain, I'm not so sure" indicate a comparison between the person and their former lover. While the former lover appears sure and confident, the person is still struggling with their emotions and uncertainty about the future. The line "I need you not to turn your back on me" suggests the person is seeking support from their former lover, and is afraid of being abandoned.

The overall message of the song is one of introspection and contemplation. The lyrics express profound emotions about how the end of a relationship can lead to confusion and despair. The repetition of the same lines throughout the song emphasizes the sense of hopelessness and stagnation the person is feeling.

Saw them live in Amsterdam last sunday. They were absolutely amazing! At one point (4th song I think) Dom was having problems with his setup, so someone from backstage had to come up and sort things out. At this point Kai started some stand-up comedy to entertain the crowd. I thought it was really dope, though Kai told us he was very ashamed of it happening.
