fairplay
Mr. Scruff Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Wouldn't that be fair
Wouldn't that be fair
Baby, baby
Baby, baby
Baby, baby, okay

Baby, baby, I've got this feeling in my soul
If you don't love me would it be fair
Use my love and give yours to another
Wouldn't that be fair

I can hide all of the misery and pain
I am sure I will never love this way again
Wouldn't that be fair
Do you think she would care

Wouldn't that be fair
Wouldn't that be fair

Like the sun when it hits the urban sky at day
Lights and music takes me higher
I would love to dance my life away
Now wouldn't that be fair

Baby, baby, baby
I want, I want to, want to, want to be fair
Oh, fairplay
Oh, fairplay

Soul II soul is the place where you should be
On Sunday night we'll expect you and Jazzie be
'Cause it's all about expression
'Cause it's all about expression

Funky people, express yourself tonight
But thinking 'loud but that's the same thing alive
'Cause it's all about expression
'Cause it's all about expression

Baby, I think you should come down
And try to express yourself, yourself
Baby, baby, baby, baby, baby
I want you, want you, want you to be fair, baby

Oh, fairplay
Oh, fairplay

'Cause, baby, baby, I've got this feeling in my soul
If you don't love me would it be fair
Use my love and give yours to another
Wouldn't that, wouldn't that, wouldn't that be fair

Oh fairplay, oh fairplay
Oh fairplay, oh fairplay

Overall Meaning

In "Fairplay," Mr. Scruff sings about the concept of fairness in love. The song teases the idea that if love isn't reciprocated, then giving love to someone else would be fair. It is clear that the song's protagonist is struggling with the pain of seeing someone they care about with another person. The line "I can hide all of the misery and pain, I am sure I will never love this way again" epitomizes the sense of hopelessness in the singer. The song's catchy melody matches its light-hearted tone, allowing it to serve as a perfect chill-out tune.

The song's other lines tease the themes of light, music, and dance as the catalysts for healing the pain of love. The lines "like the sun when it hits the urban sky at day, lights and music takes me higher, I would love to dance my life away" talk about dancing away the pain and heartbreak at the Soul II Soul club on Sundays.

Overall, the song is a melodic and emotionally evocative tune full of beautiful metaphors that speak to the universality of the human condition.

Better late than never: the instrumental track is 2Day & 2Moro ‎– Disney On Acid. It came out in 2003 on 7" 45 RPM vinyl on Omniverse Records OMNI703. I when I first heard it I thought whoever made this is a genious! Well, it turns out that 4 Hero's Marc Mac is behind this song and also the label!
You can still pick it up on Discogs at the moment...
