Honeybee
Muddy Waters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sail on
Sail on my little honey bee, sail on
Sail on
Sail on my little honey bee, sail on
You gonna keep on sailing
Till you lose your happy home

Sail on
Sail on my little honey bee, sail on
Sail on
Sail on my little honey bee, sail on
I don't mind you sailing
But please don't sail so long

All right, little honey bee

I hear a lotta buzzing
Sound like my little honey bee
I hear a lotta buzzing
Sound like my little honey bee

She been all around the world making honey
But now she is coming back home to me

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Muddy Watersโ€™s โ€œHoneybeeโ€ suggest a sad and mournful tune. Through these lyrics, the singer addresses the titular honeybee, urging it to continue sailing. He acknowledges that it will keep sailing until it loses its happiness at home. The repetition of the phrase โ€œsail onโ€ in the chorus emphasizes the sense of inevitability surrounding the honeybee's journey. It is quite possible that the honeybee in question is not an insect, but rather a person. The lyrics suggest that someone dear to the singer has left home to find happiness, even though the singer is not happy about this. He implores the honeybee to return home before staying away for too long.

In the next verse, the singer emphasizes his desire for the honeybee to return home. Through the repeated phrase โ€œSail onโ€ the singer conveys how he doesnโ€™t want the honeybee to stay away for too long. His plea is to come home soon. The final verse talks about how the singer noticed the buzzing sound which could potentially be the honeybee's return. The lyrics suggest that the honeybee has been traveling around the world, making honey until she comes back home. The final line โ€œBut now she is coming back home to meโ€ suggests that the singer is happy that the honeybee is returning home.

Muddy playing a Tele with a capo and a slide. I must show this to all those folks who say real players don't need a capo.
Marvelous!

People who say that rubbish don't know what they are talking about...

@otherstar1

@@richinderbyshire4779 yep...you can also show them just about anything by the Iceman, Albert Collins who played just about everything with a capo at the 7th fret.

@richinderbyshire4779

@@otherstar1 I dont remember typing that comment :) Agreed about AC though.

@hughcameron

Muddy and the band played the first gig of this tour in Glasgow. Carey Bell led the band for 45 minutes before Muddy came on for an hour and a half. After Muddy left the band played for another hour. It was the best night of music I have ever had.

Was it a common thing to happen? I mean such a long show.

So very cool Hugh. This is a marvelous video. It sort of peaked here, didn't it?

@Bellabaddi

Sounds like a lot of legends did this. bb king and James brown did this, a lot of others I canโ€™t recall too. I was always impressed at how good their whole bands were, like a well oiled machine.

@biggusdickus1689

@@samsukepicotiri2919 Lot's of bands will play 3+ hours in more jam centred genres. Pretty common amongst blues/jazz artists as well as prog/psych bands
