Muddy Waters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well, I wish I was a catfish,
Swimmin in a oh, deep, blue sea
I would have all you good lookin women,
Fishin, fishin after me
Sure 'nough, a-after me
Sure 'nough, a-after me
Oh 'nough, oh 'nough, sure 'nough
I went to my baby's house,
And I sit down oh, on her steps
She said, "C'mon in now, Muddy
You know, my husband just now left
Sure 'nough, he just now left
Sure 'nough, he just now left
Oh Lord, oh well, oh well

Well, my mother told my father,
Just before hmmm, I was born,
"I got a boy child's comin',
Gonna be, he gonna be a rollin' stone,
Sure 'nough, he's a rollin' stone
Sure 'nough, he's a rollin' stone"
Oh well he's a, oh well he's a, oh well he's a

Well, I feel, yes I feel,
Feel that I could lay down oh, time ain't long
I'm gonna catch the first thing smokin',
Back, back down the road I'm goin'
Back down the road I'm goin'

Back down the road I'm goin'
Sure 'nough back, sure 'nough back

Overall Meaning

Muddy Waters's song "Rollin' Stone" is about a man who is a bit of a drifter and moves from place to place without much purpose. The opening stanza sees the singer expressing his desire to be a catfish in the deep blue sea, as then all the good-looking women would be fishing after him. This reveals the singer's insecurities, suggesting that he desires attention and recognition from others.

In the second verse, the singer visits his lover's house, and she invites him in because her husband has just left. This suggests that the singer is not a particularly respectable man, as his lover is willing to cheat on her husband with him. The third verse talks about how the singer's mother forewarned his father before he was born that he was going to be a "Rollin' Stone." This suggests that his nature was predetermined, and he was always going to be a drifter.

Finally, the last verse reveals that the singer feels a sense of detachment from his current situation, and he is ready to leave at any moment. He knows that time is not on his side, and he wishes to get going on his journey. Overall, "Rollin' Stone" tells the story of a man who is aimless and without direction, and he is constantly moving from place to place.

When my grandma was on her dying bed, she wasn't conscious, but we decided to play music in her ears to let her know we were there. My Grandma was more into Soul, Funk and Rock n Roll, but she knew I loved the Blues and Muddy Waters, I played this song in her ear. So when I hear this song, I think of that moment

James G

For my mom, it was the Johnny Cash Sun Recordings. Kind of the same vein: Americana, and as authentic as it gets. Not a time for bullshit.

Creighton

@James G yep! I love all the old country, blues, and jazz. I really like Hank Williams senior and Jimmie Rodgers, along with a lot of the old blues

This has to be one of the greatest blues records of them all! But let's not forget that Muddy started out as a tribute band to one of the truly titanic figures of the blues - Son House! House was also the primary influence on Robert Johnson. And, speaking of 'Kings' of the blues, Charley Patton was Howlin Wolf's guru as well as a major influence on Fred McDowell, Robert Petway and countless others.

I've always been told that our family is related to Muddy Waters, but I didn't know he was this special in Blues history. It is an honor to be a distant relative.

Manuel Meraz

One of the Godfathers of Rock and Roll and one of greatest rockers of all time!
