Ben Lovett on “The Wolf”:
"“The Wolf” came about halfway through our writing process. We had been kind of working on a bunch of songs […] and “The Wolf” was one that gave us a bit more conviction that we were ready to go. A lot of the album making process was done without the intention of making an album. We started writing songs and bringing them to the table purely for the sake of doing that and I remember the day that we played out “The Wolf” for the first time we knew that it was time to lock down a producer and get it done.[…] [“The Wolf”] provided that slightly harder edge that we had been looking for. […] It definitely had little a bit more grit than anything we had released previously, and helped us identify the album we were making."
Marcus Mumford on “The Wolf”:
"It’s really fun to play that one. You just get to wig out. It’s quite hard on the old vocals."

Your eyes follow like tracers in the night
And the tightrope that you wander everytime
You have been weighed, you have been found wanting
Been wondering for days
How you felt me slip your mind
Leave behind your wanton ways
'Cause you were all I ever longed for
Sheltered, you better keep the wolf back from the door
He wanders ever closer every night
And how he waits begging for blood
I promised you everything would be fine
Been wondering for days
How you felt me slip your mind
Leave behind your wanton ways
I want to learn to love in kind
'Cause you were all I ever longed for
Hold my gaze love, you know I want to let it go
We will stare down at the wonder of it all
And I-I will hold you in it and I-I will hold you in it
Been wondering for days
How you felt me slip your mind
Leave behind your wanton ways
I want to look you in the eye
'Cause you were all I ever longed for
Been wondering for days
How you felt me slip your mind
Leave behind your wanton ways
I want to learn to love in kind
'Cause you were all I ever longed for
The lyrics of "The Wolf" by Mumford & Sons captures the thrill of love and the fear of losing someone. The song begins with a heart full of fright, a feeling of being vulnerable, and the tracers of the night reflecting in the eyes of the person they are addressing. The tightrope is the metaphor of their relationship, where they have been tested and found wanting. Despite this, the person who speaks in the song still longs for the other, leaving behind their ways to learn to love them in kind.
The chorus is a warning that danger lurks nearby. The "wolf" is a symbol of temptation, desire, and everything that can ruin a relationship. The singer encourages their partner to guard themselves against this threat, promising that everything will be fine. The second verse echoes the sentiments of the first, amplifying the urgency to be with the person they love. The chorus repeats, strengthening the message of protection and sacrifice.
The bridge is a moment of surrender, expressing the desire to stare down at the wonder of it all and hold onto the moment. The final verse repeats the first, emphasizing the longing of the singer for their beloved. Overall, the song captures the feeling of being lost in love and the fear of losing oneself in the process.

This song is a masterpiece. It deserved more attention than it had.

I'm digging the fact that the have evolved as artists. It just shows versatility and that their creative level doesn't stop at one sound and is willing to take a chance from such a specific sound too put themselves out there like that knowing the very specific fan base may not react well to it. I'm liking their new sound and have been saying it since I've heard it. Good Job Mumford and Sons! Thumbs up from me.

Honestly, this album wasn't much unlike their last two. It's still amazingly done, as the lyrics are still amazingly put together and different than other artists. Though the use of electric instruments is different, their sound still reminds me of them. I love the change and I love what they have produced. I'm extremely happy with everything they have put forth.

Just because a band changes their style, doesn't make them horrible. It's called branching out in the art form, instead of being close minded, one style band.
More power to them, I'll still love their music.
Alessio Castellino
***** agree... but that style was what made them unique...now, as you can see in many comments, "they sound like...". Still good but i think it's a pity

Alessio Castellino And there are plenty of banjo-playing folk bands whose sound is similar to Mumford's first two albums. It's just that the Mumford fanbase didn't know any of them so they never brought it up.
Alessio Castellino
AcademyAwardsPerson name some of those bands. And don' t mention the first band that comes on your mind which uses banjo because using the same instrument (even a peculiar one as banjo is) doesn't make two bands sound similar
AcademyAwardsPerson
Alessio Castellino Erm, The Avett Brothers or Greensky Bluegrass? And while they don't play the banjos, they have a similar sound to Fleet Foxes. And you basically just proved my point; just because they are suddenly playing guitars now, it doesn't make their music similar to other bands. You could practically compare their first two albums to every bluegrass band out there if we're generally speaking. My point is, and somebody else mentioned this (Daniel Smith from two weeks ago), folk music is regurgitated every bit as much as rock music. It's just that rock music is more popular in the mainstream so therefore it's less noticeable.
Alessio Castellino
AcademyAwardsPerson generally speaking you' re totally right. though i think (as someone here said) that this new style of theirs mingles among the rest of the contemporary indie-pop-rock bands while i still havent found a bluegrass song as powerful as hopeless wanderer....but this of course it's just my own opinion
