Exogenesis: Symphony Pt 1: Overture
Muse Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Aping my soul,
You stole my overture,
Trapped in Gods program,
Oh I can't escape

Who are we?
Where are we?
When are we?
Why are we?
Who are we?
Where are we?
Why, why, why?

I can't forgive you,
And I can't forget

Who are we?
Where are we?
When are we?
Why are we?
Who are we?
Where are we?

When are we?
Why are we in here?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Muse's Exogenesis Symphony part 1: Overture contemplate humanity's existential struggles. The opening lines--"Aping my soul, / You stole my overture"--suggest a profound feeling of loss or violation, as if someone (or something) has taken over one's spirit, music, or creativity. This imagery of being aped or mimicked could represent the feeling of being trapped in society's expectations, rules, and norms, which inhibit one's autonomy and individuality. The next line--"Trapped in Gods program"--further evokes a sense of being automatons or puppets in a divine plan, unable to change our fate or escape our destiny. This line could be interpreted in a religious or a secular sense, depending on the listener's worldview.

The repeated questions--"Who are we? Where are we? When are we? Why are we?"--underscore the search for meaning and purpose that plagues humans throughout their lives. These questions reflect our desire to understand our identity, our location in space and time, and our motivations or causes. However, the fact that the questions keep repeating without clear answers suggests a sense of despair or confusion, as if the questions themselves are unanswerable or meaningless. The climax of the lyrics--"Why are we in here?"--seems to express a sense of confinement or imprisonment, as if we are trapped in our own bodies, minds, or environments. This line could be interpreted as a lament, a plea for liberation, or a challenge to the listener to question their own existence.

This piece of music is one of those that is crafted so brilliantly that you can keep coming back to it again and again at different points in your life and still have an incredible experience. Depending on your mood, sometimes it's blissful, sometimes ecstatic, other times it's a twisted knife of anguish, but always transporting to that transcendental state of heightened emotion. Truly amazing that soundwaves can evoke such incredible experiences - hats off to Mr Bellamy ❤

And this is a great example of why I love Muse through and through. I can listen to each album start to finish and not feel like I'm missing anything on the scale of emotions.
