He released his debut album, ''Aijuswanaseing'' (read: "I Just Want to Sing"), in 2000, which was well-received by critics and audiences. Musiq did much of his own songwriting, and most of the record was produced and co-written by Ivan "Orthodox" Barias and Carvin "Ransum" Haggins, then of the A Touch of Jazz production company headed by Jazzy Jeff, now of Karma Productions. The singles "Just Friends (Sunny)", "Love", and "Girl Next Door" received exposure in America mainly on the more underground music video network, MTV2, as well as on BET. His singles also received a good amount of airplay on urban and urban contemporary radio stations.
In 2002, he released his sophomore album, ''Juslisen'' (read: "Just Listen"), as simply ''Musiq''. Both videos also got substantial play during the year on VH1 Soul. The singles had heavily amounts of airplay on both urban and urban contemporary radio sations in 2002. He also gained exposure during that year by opening concerts for Alicia Keys.

Once again, its video got heavy play on MTV2 and VH1 Soul, as well as on MTV Jams. He also appeared in Santana's song "Nothing at All" which is featured in his 2002 album ''Shaman''.
In 2003, the singles and videos "forthenight" and "whoknows" from his third LP, ''Soulstar''. "forthenight" was one of VH1 Soul's most played videos of 2004, and also had a very successful run on American urban radio stations.

I knew that you got down
Skin caramel complexion
Lips chocolate brown
I'm wondering now
Would you get huff for me
And let me stuff your philly blunt with
This black sensi
Get high like the clouds that watch the city
Guff till we'd go blind like my man Stevie
Til the whites of her eyes are bloodshot glossy floss me
Then we'll fall fast aslwwp
And when we wake up we can pick up wher we L-E-F-T
See I don't mind if you don't
Cause ssee I'm like if you're with it then it's on
So see me tonight
All the while I'm hoping that she would inhale
So I could be like Michael Jackson and enjoy myself
Cause what I want to do is make a tuna melt
Should roll up in the sheets and let me spark thatL
(Hook)
What we going to do when the L is gone
Should we just roll some more
So we can flow some more
Or maybe I should just take you home
And make you flend for my
Like a love jones
(repeat hook)
It we evident that you were hesitant when we did it
You rolled it, I lit it, we hit it
Instantly you effected my state of being to cloud nine
I can tell that the hydro got you
by the way your eyes were half closed and mine too
Lord knows if we would have rolled another stogie
You would've been holding like En Vogue
I knew that you laced it
Yes indeed
Cause I can tell when I tasted it
Yes indeed
Got me breaking in sweats
Feeling like something crawling all over my neck
You got me drawn yes indeed
I can't believe that you got this type of effect on me
It seems that I've been flending for you and you're flending
For me for that high that we both need
Tell me what
Hook
The song "L' Is Gone" by Musiq begins with the singer reminiscing about the first time he saw his love interest, describing her as having a caramel complexion and chocolate brown lips. He then asks her if she would smoke marijuana with him, and imagines getting high with her until they're both blind, comparing their heightened state to that of Stevie Wonder. The singer then suggests they spend the night together and hopes she will inhale so he can "enjoy himself" like Michael Jackson. He ends the verse by suggesting they "roll up in the sheets" and smoke again.
In the hook, the singer asks what they will do when the L (a reference to the marijuana) is gone, suggesting they either smoke more or go home and make love. In the second verse, the singer reminisces about smoking with his love interest, feeling the effects of the marijuana and realizing that she laced it with something stronger. Despite this, he is drawn to her and flending for the high they both crave.
The lyrics of "L' Is Gone" suggest a physical and emotional connection between the singer and his love interest that is heavily influenced by drug use. While the song is musically upbeat and catchy, it also subtly highlights the dangers and addictive qualities of drug use.

Stress happens, the homie having a human moment.
This is what the loss of this woman’s energy has done to him.
If he had not been outta pocket and reckless 👁in’,
he’d be aight. She used to laugh now she get mad.
Men going their own way are broken.
You never let them see you sweat
and you never let them break you.
