Give It All
Nahko and Medicine for the People Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

...It's made a fractured line
Looks like from its god
Maybe god was my dog...

Time to pull out my paints
Brand new canvas, get things straight
There are no lines here
Double rainbows make great lakes
[?]
She is a keeper
Let her open
Everywhere I see her stress
Wonder what we gonna lose next
Well it won't be sweet love cause
It's my lesson, it's my teacher
Malcom X or Martin Luther
And I am neither
Perfect world what is this
Does it even exist
And would I live there?

Mmmm if I could learn to be alone
I would always have a home

Give it all you got
Give it all you got
All you've gained and all you've lost
And that's lot. Ya, that's a lot

Know the road like dharma bums
From the Catskills toward San Juan
With just an atlas
Well it was magic
Thank you Paul for those directions
Over the bridge or Indian ocean
Those troubled waters, no longer silent
In a dream, [?] singing to me
And casting lines to Palestine

[?]
It's nice to know a life like that
From the mount of Standing Rock
There were moments that I got lost
Denominators, so fuck the haters

Park hotel in Ecuador
Standing room on the jungle floor
Can't take our language
Can't drink the oil
Lost a baby, lost a friend
Some days my family is lost again
To the trauma to the war
That's how I learned to be alone
Coming from a broken home
That's how I learned to be alone
Coming from a broken home

Give me all you've got
Give me all you've got
We'll make stories, we'll make love
And that's enough. Ya that's enough

Well make stories, well make love
And that's a lot. Ya, that's a lot

Overall Meaning

The song "Give It All" by Nahko and Medicine for the People is a reflection on the many challenges, losses, and lessons of life. The opening lyrics of the song suggest a sense of brokenness in the singer's world, as if they are trying to make sense of fragmented pieces that may have once belonged to a divine plan. The idea that "god was my dog" is intriguing and might suggest a shift in power dynamics – perhaps the singer feels that they are in control, or that they have a special connection to a spiritual force.

As the song progresses, the singer paints a picture of the struggles they have faced and the ways they have tried to cope. They reference painting a new canvas, hoping to straighten things out and create something beautiful. They also mention the beauty of double rainbows and the power of love in the face of stress and uncertainty. Throughout the song, there is a sense of searching for meaning and purpose, and a recognition that life is full of loss, pain, and hardship. Despite this, the singer seems to be clinging to a sense of hope and a determination to give life their all.

The chorus provides an affirmation of this commitment to living fully and passionately, no matter what: "give it all you got, all you've gained and all you've lost, and that's a lot." The singer acknowledges that they have experienced a lot of pain and struggle, but they are still willing to pour themselves into life and all its complexities. In the final lines of the song, the singer seems to be pleading with the universe, asking for everything life has to offer, and asserting that even in the midst of darkness and chaos, love and connection are enough to sustain us.

I have the same story. Still learning how to get better well said

@crow2able

At 70 years old I had many directional songs in my youth. But what is missing in this generation is the 'way sayers'. Nahko speaks to this generation with truth, wisdom and outrage at all the hate. Thanks Nahko and medicine for the people for showing the way in this world. May you all rise and fight the hate with your magic. Blessed be. Fuck the haters!!
