Danny Boy
Nana Mouskouri Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling
From glen to glen, and down the mountain side
The summer's gone, and all the flowers are dying
'Tis you, 'tis you must go and I must bide.

But come you back when summer's in the meadow
Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow
'Tis I'll be there in sunshine or in shadow
Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy, I love you so.

And if you come, when all the flowers are dying
And I am dead, as dead I well may be
You'll come and find the place where I am lying
And kneel and say an "Ave" there for me.

And I shall hear, tho' soft you tread above me
And all my dreams will warm and sweeter be

If you'll not fail to tell me that you love me
I simply sleep in peace until you come to me.

Overall Meaning

Nana Mouskouri's rendition of the classic Irish tune "Danny Boy," is a melancholic yet beautiful song that speaks of love, loss, and the inevitability of death. From the very first lines of the song, the listener is transported to the quiet and serene countryside of Ireland - a land of glens and mountainsides that is both beautiful and haunting. The pipes are calling Danny Boy, and he must leave his beloved behind.

The lyrics are filled with longing as the singer urges Danny Boy to return to her when summer's in the meadow or when the valley is hushed and white with snow. She assures him that she will be there, waiting for him, in sunshine or in shadow, and professes her love for him. But as the song progresses, it becomes clear that there is a finality to their separation. The singer acknowledges that she may die before Danny Boy returns, but she implores him to come back and visit her grave. She wishes for him to kneel and say an "Ave" for her and promises that she will hear him even though she is dead. In the final lines of the song, the singer asks Danny Boy to tell her that he loves her and promises to sleep in peace until he comes to her.

Overall, "Danny Boy" is a heart-wrenching song that speaks to the universal human experiences of love, loss, and mortality. The lyrics are timeless and continue to resonate with people all over the world.

The second verse is often overlooked, but the anguish of separation in life and the hope of meeting again in death is expressed with painful beauty.

Absolutely the most beautiful rendition of "Danny Boy" I have ever heard. Nana Mouskouri has the voice of an angel. Thanks for posting this video with the beautiful scenes to complement her voice.

This is the best version of the song that I have heard. My son David died this past April. While listening to Danny Boy, I realized that it was easy to substitute Davy for Danny. Every time that I listen to Danny Boy, now my mind automatically substitutes Davy for Danny.

Nana has the voice of an angel. The presentation is very nicely done; your pictures match the lyrics with near-perfection. Thank you for sharing.
