Rise & Fall
Nas Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

Uh, yeah turn it up, check it out

The transition from a young fool
Broke, still on his neck, he hung jewels
Live his life in the ghetto where guns rule
It was cool, wasn't mad, I had to take cabs
Made my first LP, afforded H-Class
My face gassed
'94, sold-out in every record store
Local hood rats who wouldn't speak
Now I'm who they checkin' for
Shown crazy love
Ran up on stage with 80 thugs
After the shows, my niggas robbed the bar
And wrecked the clubs happy, no hatin'
More Henny, more blunts circulatin'
My single in rotation on every radio station
Eyes popped when I drove my
First ride on the block
Summertime, block parties, cookouts
I spent my knot
Truly, niggas was fightin' over who
Was closest to me
Happy with the new representative of QB
To hit the top, first you have to gotta fall
Before you make it
With for 4 minutes of your time
Watch me demonstrate it

This was the rise and fall
Of my fast life style
(From Nasty to Nas to Nas to Escobar)
(Mega popular center of attraction)
I was the main event on the TV for a while
This was the rise and fall
Of my fast life style
(From Nasty to Nas to Nas to Escobar)
(Mega popular center of attraction)
I was the main event on the TV for a while

Cayman Islands in the winter
Summer bus rides to Great Adventure
I've brung New York back
To real rap inventors
New crib, diamond rings, killers on my team
Infinitis for my girl for givin'
Birth to my queen
3 G's worth of chronic a week
Promoters was mad
I stopped doin' shows to spend
Time in the street
Loot declined, eventually so did my shine
Repo lookin' for my Lex
Back then I wasn't buyin'
You can guess niggas started sayin'
"With all the success
Why is your mom still in the projects?"
I answered them vexed
Fuck out my face, pistol in my car, full clip
I read about Pablo Escobar and
Got on some shit
So-called mans would plot on my chips
I was frontin'
Niggas thought I was rich and got
Mad 'cause they was pumpin'
My assumption niggas want me
Pumped in the casket
Kept the gun the same three-fifth
A nigga got bagged with

This was the rise and fall
Of my fast life style
(From Nasty to Nas to Nas to Escobar)
(Mega popular center of attraction)
I was the main event on the TV for a while
This was the rise and fall
Of my fast life style
(From Nasty to Nas to Nas to Escobar)
(Mega popular center of attraction)
I was the main event on the TV for a while

Caught a case, now I'm home
Starin' off into space
Flashbacks of all the jewelry
Cars crossin' my face
Rappers I met, hoes on video cassette
No management
No more good life and no respect
Hearin' crowds roar
Cristal pourin' mixed drinks
Haunted by the thoughts of
Second album sophomore jinx
Where did I fail? Death threats
Woke up in cold sweats
Thinkin' about all these murders that
Know where I rest
From hangin' with crazy cliques that's
Known to take shit
Bracelets, and all that beef
Now I'm involved, was paperless
My cars were auctioned off
Now I catch rides with kidnap-niggas
Who snatch babies up to get back figures
Lessons from heaven
Every night I slept with my weapon
To guard my family
For a minute I forgot my profession
Not from Columbia or Nicaragua
Don't distribute coke from Antigua
That shipped out to Panama
Pablo Escobar's bloody reign came to an end
Far from my life a kid who
Made his fame from a pen
Hit the studio and change the game again
Wrote down all the pain within
Top of the charts, triple platinum
Got the fake love back, money stacks
More plaques had to see who I was just
To know where I was at
Saw both sides of the game
All the ups and downs
This goes out to the future
Rap kings comin' up now
This was the rise and fall
Of my fast life style
(From Nasty to Nas to Nas to Escobar)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Nas's song "Rise & Fall" depict the journey of a young man who rises from a humble background to the heights of fame and success, only to experience a dramatic downfall. The song explores the contrast between the fast-paced, glamorous lifestyle that comes with success and the consequences that accompany it.

The first verse highlights the transition from a struggling individual to a successful artist. Nas reflects on his early days when he was broke, wearing jewelry around his neck to symbolize his aspirations. He describes living in the ghetto where guns rule, but he remained cool, taking cabs and eventually affording luxury items like H-Class cars. His first LP sold out in every record store, gaining him popularity within his neighborhood. The local hood rats who once ignored him are now checking for him. The joy and excitement of success is evident as he enjoys the love and recognition from fans, even indulging in reckless behavior with his crew. However, he acknowledges that in order to reach the top, one must experience a fall, and he is about to demonstrate that.

The second verse delves into the downfall of Nas's fast-paced lifestyle. He speaks of enjoying the luxuries that success brings, such as vacations in the Cayman Islands and bus rides to amusement parks. He takes pride in bringing rap back to its roots in New York and having a team of loyal individuals supporting him. However, his excessive spending and decline in popularity lead to financial difficulties and a decline in his public image. People question why he hasn't helped his mother escape the projects, and he responds with frustration, refusing to pretend to be someone he's not. Nas's desperation leads him to embrace a dangerous mindset inspired by Pablo Escobar, the infamous drug lord. He becomes entangled in conflicts with others who want to take advantage of his perceived wealth. Eventually, he is caught up in legal trouble, losing his luxury possessions and struggling to regain respect and success in the industry.

Overall, "Rise & Fall" portrays the highs and lows of a rapid rise to fame and fortune, as well as the consequences and challenges that come with it. Nas reflects on the material excesses and the pressure to maintain an image while dealing with personal and external struggles. The song serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of succumbing to the allure of a fast life.

Son summed up his entire life and career in 4 minutes in the most vivid detail. Only a few others could do this. The average rapper couldn't do this over a full length album.

Gza said it best ā€œ make it brief sun, half as short twice as strong ā€œ knowledge of self and ones vernacular gotta be mastered!

Chanc' Register

@ PickeringSamuel DMX, Ghostface,Jay Elect, Black Thought, Murs.. the key is ā€œhalf as short twice as strongā€

@PickeringSamuel I'd say prime story telling Em. Of course Slick Rick, but he never got in depth on his personal life. Rakim wasn't really known for his story telling but is probably capable. Maybe throw Kool G Rap in there. Ghostface and Andre 3000. Kendrick is a good story teller too, but lacks a good slow flow like the others I mentioned for this type of vibe.

PickeringSamuel

Who else would you say is capable? I'd say Eminem, Kendrick and maybe Rakim himself.

Such an honest tale . Nas is the first and only rapper that rapped about stick up kids and how they attempted to rob and kill him. To show your vulnerability which in return shows your wisdom is a rarity in this art form. Rappers promote being gangster in all situations when it pesky benefit .
