Canada
National Anthem Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ô Canada!
Terre de nos aïeux,
Ton front est ceint de fleurons glorieux!
Car ton bras sait porter l'épée,
Il sait porter la croix!
Ton histoire est une épopée
Des plus brillants exploits.
Et ta valeur, de foi trempée,
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits.

Protégera nos foyers et nos droits.

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Canada's national anthem begin with "Ô Canada!" which translates to "Oh Canada!" The anthem then pays tribute to Canada as the land of our ancestors or "Terre de nos aïeux." The second line of the anthem refers to the country's emblematic symbol, the Maple Leaf, as Canada's "front" or "frontispiece" that is adorned with glorious "fleurs-de-lis" during the French colonial period.

The remaining verses of the anthem highlight Canada's strength and resilience both in past and present times. Canada's might is demonstrated through its individuals, who have been at the forefront of remarkable feats that have catapulted the reputation of the country, making the nation one of the best in the world. Canada is not only celebrated for its riches that can be quantified and its natural beauty but also the depth of its citizens' spirits, which is "trempée" or "tempered" by faith. In this sense, the anthem gives voice to the importance of religious faith to Canada's resilience and steadfastness.

Americans: the Canadian anthem sounds like a Christmas carol

Canadians: intensely puts down bottle of maple syrup and grabs hockey stick

@shaquilleoneal6411

Clara Norris, I think your somehow related to Chuck Norris. And yes, if an American said that to me I would put down that 64oz jug of maple syrup and wack them with a hockey stick.

@claranorris5418

Mr. FreshCanadian lol no I’m not actually related to him, but that would be super cool!!
