Always On My Mind
Naw-T-Boy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Maybe I didn't treat you
Quite as good as I should
Maybe I didn't love you
Quite as often as I could
Little things I should have said and done
I never took the time

You were always on my mind
You were always on my mind

Maybe I didn't hold you
All those lonely, lonely times
And I guess I never told you
I am so happy that you're mine
If I made you feel second best
I'm so sorry I was blind

You were always on my mind
You were always on my mind

Tell me, tell me that your sweet love hasn't died
Give me,
One more chance to keep you satisfied
Satisfied

Little things that I should have said and done
I never took the time
You were always on my mind
You were always on my mind

Tell me, tell me that your sweet love hasn't died
Give me,
One more chance to keep you satisfied
You were always on my mind
You were always on my mind
You were always on my mind
You were always in my house

You were always on my mind it's true
I never thought of anyone else but you
You are on my mind and in my dreams
I should have stopped to make you see you are always

I worked so hard I thought you knew
My love I did it all for you
I never really had the time
And I guess you couldn't read my mind you were always

You were always on my mind
You were always on my mind
You were always on my mind
You were always on my mind
You were always on my mind
You were always on my mind
You were always on my mind
You were always on my mind

Maybe I didn't treat you
Quite as good as I should
Maybe I didn't love you
Quite as often as I could
Maybe I didn't hold you
All those lonely, lonely times
And I guess I never told you

I'm so happy that you're mine
Maybe I didn't love you

Overall Meaning

The song "In My Dreams" by Naw-T-Boy is a soulful ballad about missed opportunities and regrets in a past relationship. The lyrics are written as an apology to the singer's former partner, acknowledging that he didn't treat her as well as she deserved and didn't express his love for her enough. He regrets not saying and doing the little things that could have made a difference, and not giving her the attention she deserved. Despite this, he assures her that she was always on his mind and that he never stopped loving her.

The song captures the universal desire to hold onto someone you love and the regret one feels when it's too late to fix the mistakes of the past. It's a heartbreaking ode to lost love and the longing for a second chance.

Overall, "In My Dreams" is a deeply introspective and emotional song that touches on themes of regret, love, and the fragility of relationships.

August 1987.
England.
ITV gave the Nation a one-off show "Love Me Tender".
This was televised special coverage to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Elvis Presley death.
The show had a line up of popular bands and solo artists who each performed a different one of Elvis classics.
The Pet Shop Boys performance of 'Always On My Mind' was received so well that they decided to do an official recording. Four months later and they were in the top spot. Christmas Number One. Its always been a big thing to be Christmas Number One in the UK... and certainly back then, the competition was fierce.
Always on my mind is a Ballad with MANY versions. Elvis was the 3rd person to release a cover of the song and his version fell into the Country genre, as did prior versions in the US 1972. Early 80s brought about Willie Nelsons cover version, again Country genre.
The Pet Shop Boys were able to make this song a "successful crossover" by reaching the top spot with their version... genre: Synth pop / Acid house.
Synth pop DEFINES the 80's decade for the UK. It was masssive over here. But it never really caught on the same way in America. It is only through social media that a younger generation of Americans are discovering and appreciating what we have ALWAYS loved.. our home grown musicians and the sounds that they created. British bands were on another level and the world is short on ideas of how to top it these days We are down to re-making, re-touching, re-mastering anything that can be re-released. Same with films... The magic has all but gone.
I love ALL genres of music. But if decades could be eaten, my comfort food would be the 80s. ❤

All Of Us Strangers brought me to this version of this song! It's inclusion in the movie is a particularly wonderful moment in it!

@ramanbhandary7501

same here.

@sophiamcdougall5908

SAME. It makes so much sense as a parent-child song, maybe even more than as a romantic song.
