Pămînt
Negură Bunget Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Plînge pămîntu’ sub mine,
Și eu plîng deasupra-i

Pe cărarea necălcată,
Pe rouă nescuturată,
Pămîntul s-a cutremurat,
Apele s-au tulburat,
Munții și cu dealurile,
Pădurile cu umbrele,
Văile cu luncile.
Luna fața și-a schimbat,
Soarele s-a întunecat! [repeated]

Mugure crescut în rouă,
Desfă-te morminte, desfăte-n două

Mînce-te-ar Pămîntu’!

Arde-te-ar focu’!
Înghiți-te-ar locu’! [repeated]

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Negură Bunget's "Pămîntu" express a deep emotional unity with nature. The first two lines, "Plînge pămîntu' sub mine, Și eu plîng deasupra-i" (The earth cries beneath me, And I cry above it), suggest that the singer feels a strong connection to the earth and its cycles of growth and destruction. This is further emphasized in the following lines, which describe the earth's movements: "Pămîntul s-a cutremurat, Apele s-au tulburat, Munții și cu dealurile, Pădurile cu umbrele, Văile cu luncile" (The earth shook, The waters were disturbed, The mountains and hills, The forests with their shadows, The valleys and meadows). Through these descriptions, the singer is clearly in tune with the natural world around them.

The second part of the song, "Mugure crescut în rouă, Desfă-te morminte, desfăte-n două / Mînce-te-ar Pămîntu’! Arde-te-ar focu’! Înghiți-te-ar locu’!" (Bud grown in dew, Open up graves, open in two / May the earth devour you! May fire burn you! May the ground swallow you!) is more ambiguous in its meaning. It may be interpreted as a call to embrace transformation and change, even if it is painful. The reference to graves opening up also suggests a cycle of death and rebirth that is characteristic of nature.

"The earth cries below me
And I cry above her

On the untrodden path,
On unshaken dew,
The Earth has quaked,
The waters have swollen,
The mountains and the hills,
The forests with their shadows,
The valleys with their meadows,
The moon's face has twisted
The sun has darkened!

Bud grown in dew,
Open yourself, grave, split yourself in two

May the earth eat you whole!
May the fire burn you all!
May your home swallow you whole!"

This band makes me proud to be Romanian!

@ricardojuanposthumus1368

and it's even more goosebump inducing Live. I thought for sure they would use this as an introtape, but they played every instrument by the band. it was breathtaking. An entire room filled with people stood there speechless.

for an approximate online translation, you can find the original and thorough Romanian lyrics by searching : metal-archives - negura bunget virstele pamantului. The band uses old romanian words (some as old as Thracia), so the google my not translate them all. The song start with : Plînge pămîntu sub mine, Şi eu plîng deasupra-i meaning... The earth is crying beneath me And I also cry above it... .... then after describing apocalyptic natural phenomenons.. The song will end with a curse
