She first gained fame with her trip hop-inspired debut album, Whoa, Nelly! (2000), which was a critical and commercial success that spawned two top-10 singles on the Billboard Hot 100, "I'm Like a Bird" and "Turn Off the Light". The first of the two singles won her a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Furtado's introspective folk-heavy 2003 second album, Folklore, explored her Portuguese roots. Its singles received moderate success in Europe, but the album's underperformance compared to her debut was regarded as a sophomore slump.
Furtado's third album, Loose (2006), was a smash hit and became her bestselling album, with more than 10 million copies sold worldwide, also making it one of the bestselling albums of the 2000s. Considered a radical image reinvention, Furtado continued to explore her Portuguese heritage while leaning heavier into hip hop. The album spawned four successful number-one singles worldwide; "Promiscuous", "Maneater", "Say It Right" and "All Good Things (Come to an End)".
She released her first Spanish-language album, Mi Plan, in 2009, which won her a Latin Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Album. In 2012, Furtado released her nostalgia-inspired fifth album The Spirit Indestructible. Furtado split with her management and went independent thereafter, releasing her indie-pop sixth album, The Ride, in 2017 under her own label Nelstar Entertainment.
She has won many awards throughout her career, including one Grammy Award from seven nominations, one Latin Grammy Award, ten Juno Awards, one BRIT Award, one Billboard Music Award, one MTV Europe Music Award, one World Music Award, and three Much Music Video Awards. Furtado has a star on Canada's Walk of Fame, and was awarded Commander of the Order of Prince Henry on February 28, 2014, by Aníbal Cavaco Silva, the then-President of Portugal.
Believers
Nelly Furtado Lyrics

Of the blue bird as she sings
The six-o'clock alarm would never ring
But six rings and I rise
Wipe the sleep out of my eyes
The shaving razor's cold and it stings
Cheer up sleepy Jean
Daydream believer and a
Homecoming queen
You once thought of me
As a white knight on his steed
Now you know how happy I can be
Oh, our good times start and end
Without all I want to spend
But how much baby do we really need
Cheer up sleepy Jean
Oh what can it mean to a
Daydream believer and a
Homecoming queen
The song "Believers" by Nelly Furtado talks about the absence of people who could have supported us during difficult moments. In the first few lines, she is talking to someone who is focused on wrong things or heading in the wrong direction in life. The person is not taking advantage of the good things around them and instead is looking at the negative aspects. She points out that this attitude will lead them to miss out on the last rays of hope at the end of the day. The following lines talk about being on a long flight, probably indicating that the journey has taken a long time, and the realization is dawning that the good life is slipping away from them.
The lyrics "Where are all the believers? Where are they when you need them?" emphasize the importance of having people who are there for you during a crisis. It's a question about why people who had once promised to stay for the long haul suddenly disappear during hard times. The phrase "Get down and pray" suggests that Furtado is looking for someone or something to provide hope and guidance. Despite the absence of these supportive individuals, the singer is optimistic about taking charge of her life and not giving up.
Overall, "Believers" is a song that talks about the importance of having support during times of hardship. It points to the fact that sometimes the people we expect to be there for us are not, and at such times, we might be left to pick ourselves up from the rubble.

You’re on the wrong side
You've chosen the wrong path
Looking at the right side
Aware of the better path you didn't choose
This is the last light
Your final chance to make things right
At the end of the day
When everything else is said and done
You’re on a long flight
You're on a journey of self-discovery
Taking your last bite
Enjoying the last bit of luxury you have
Of the good life before it goes away
Before your situation changes for the worse
Where’d you go, oh where’d you go my friends, my friends?
Why did you leave me alone?
You said you would be there till the end, the end
You promised to stick with me through thick and thin
Knock you down you get back up again, again
You're resilient despite facing hardships
And when they run after you
When they come for you
You just run from them
You flee or avoid confrontation
Where are all the believers?
Where are the people with unwavering faith?
Where are they when you need em’?
Why aren't they around when you need them most?
Where are all of the healers?
Where are the people who can mend broken spirits?
Why’d they run away?
Why did they disappear when they're needed?
This is the right time
Now is the perfect moment for change
Baby to be mine
To take control, to own this opportunity
And taste the good life
To savor the pleasures of life
Before it goes away
Before these luxuries vanish
Knock me down I get back up again, again
I'm resilient despite facing hardships
And if they run after me
If they chase after me
I’ll just run from them
I'll avoid and escape the danger
I need somebody to save me now
I require someone's assistance urgently
Somebody to save me now
Someone to help me get through my struggles
Somebody to save me
A savior to rescue me
