An uncommon artist with an uncommon sopranino voice, Ney Matogrosso fell in the Brazilian popular music scene like a bomb in the '70s aboard the Secos & Molhados. The end of the group marked the beginning of a fertile and successful solo career in which he began exploring his sensuous and charismatic persona through satiric and ironic repertories. As time passed, he substituted self-contained and deeply sensitive interpretations of classics for the popular and classical Brazilian music. Along with his representative and prolific solo discography, for which he received three platinum and three gold records, Matogrosso recorded in Itália with Astor Piazzola, performed in Argentina, Uruguay, participated in two Montreux Jazz Festivals (Switzerland), and toured Portugal several times. He also performed in Israel and the U.S., but always refused invitations to develop an international career. Matogrosso also worked as an actor in Sonho de Valsa (by Ana Carolina, the director, not the singer/composer) and Caramujo Flor (short subject by Joel Pizzini), and directed shows by RPM, Cazuza, and Simone.
Arriving in Rio de Janeiro in 1966, Matogrosso became a hippie leather artisan and divided his time between Rio, São Paulo, and Brasília, where he was a close friend of singer/composer Luli. Through her he met João Ricardo, who had a vision for a groundbreaking group and was searching for a high-pitched male voice. Invited by Ricardo, Matogrosso moved to São Paulo where he spent one year dedicating himself to exhaustive rehearsals, artisanship, and theater plays. With the explosive success of Secos e Molhados and the group's final dissolution, Matogrosso started his solo career exploring his unusual voice timbre, his mesmerizing scenic persona, and his androgynous visuals, enhanced by innovative and exotic costumes. A second solo album, Água do Céu - Pássaro, was supported by the show Homem de Neanderthal, in 1975, with which Matogrosso opened in Rio de Janeiro, drawing both raves and packed houses. "Barco Negro" and "Homem com H" appeared amongst considerable polemics aroused by the usual conservatives on duty. In that period, he worked with Astor Piazzola in Milan, Italy, where he recorded a double single with the Argentinean composer. A cleaner Matogrosso recorded Bandido in 1976, having his first national hit as a solo artist with "Bandido Corazón," written especially for him by Rita Lee.

Que os homens armaram pra me convencer
A pagar sem ver toda essa droga
Que já vem malhada antes de eu nascer
Não me ofereceram nenhum cigarro
Fiquei na porta estacionando os carros
Não me elegeram chefe de nada
Brasil, mostra a tua cara
Quero ver quem paga pra gente ficar assim
Brasil, qual é o teu negócio?
O nome do teu sócio?
Confia em mim
Não me convidaram pra essa festa pobre
Que os homens armaram pra me convencer
Apagar sem ver toda essa droga
Que já vem malhada antes de eu nascer
Não me sortearam a garota do Fantástico
Não me subornaram, será que é meu fim
Ver TV a cores na taba de um índio
Programada pra só dizer sim
Brasil, mostra a tua cara
Quero ver quem paga pra gente ficar assim
Brasil, qual é o teu negócio?
O nome do teu sócio?
Confia em mim
Brasil, mostra a tua cara
Quero ver quem paga pra gente ficar assim
Brasil, qual é o teu negócio?
O nome do teu sócio?
Confia em mim
Grande pátria desimportante
Em nenhum instante eu vou te trair
Não vou te trair
Não me sortearam a garota do Fantástico
Não me subornaram, será que é meu fim
Ver TV a cores na taba de um índio
Programada pra só dizer sim
Brasil, mostra a tua cara
Quero ver quem paga pra gente ficar assim
Brasil, qual é o teu negócio?
O nome do teu sócio?
Confia em mim
Brasil, mostra a tua cara
Quero ver quem paga pra gente ficar assim
Brasil, qual é o teu negócio?
O nome do teu sócio?
Confia em mim
The lyrics of Ney Matogrosso's song "Brasil" express a sense of exclusion and frustration with the societal and political realities of Brazil. The opening lines reveal the singer's feeling of being left out of a "pobre festa" (poor party) organized by men to manipulate and deceive the masses. The party symbolizes a corrupt and unjust system that aims to control and exploit the singer and others like him.
The lyrics further emphasize the singer's disconnection from this system. He mentions not being offered a cigarette and instead being left to park cars at the door. This imagery suggests his lack of agency and position of insignificance within society. Additionally, he expresses not being elected as a leader and having a credit card that feels like a dangerous weapon, hinting at the power dynamics and economic inequalities at play in Brazil.
The repeated phrase "Mostra a tua cara" (Show your face) calls for transparency and accountability from Brazil. The singer demands to see who is responsible for the current state of the country, asking who is paying for it to stay this way. He questions the motives and associations of those in power, demanding to know the "negócio" (business) and the "nome do teu sócio" (the name of your partner). This reflects his skepticism and mistrust towards the ruling class, seeking the truth behind their actions.
As the song continues, the lyrics address the manipulation of media. The singer mentions not being chosen for a popular television show and not being bribed, questioning if this is his end. He comments on watching color TV in an indigenous village that seems programmed to always say yes, highlighting the superficiality and conformity promoted by mass media.
Overall, the lyrics convey a sense of disillusionment and a call for transparency and change in Brazil's social and political landscape. The singer refuses to betray his homeland and demands honesty and accountability from those in power. Through its critique of inequality, manipulation, and media influence, the song highlights important social and political issues prevalent in Brazilian society.
