Icon
Ohmme Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She ladled the conversation
Skimming from the top
That damn helium balloon from last year
Still refuses to pop

They asked her what the plan was
It's really simple math
She's hungry to distraction
And he's better hanging half

And I want a new icon
I want a new icon
I want a new icon

I want a new icon
I want a new icon
I want a new icon

She rounded out her edges
To be soft and diffuse
That damn helium balloon from last year
Still hasn't found a better use

The second toe went numb
She kicked the grizzly sludge
She's tallying a list of terrible things
She doesn't need

To buy until you die
Buy until you die
Buy until you die
Buy until you die
Buy until you die
Buy until you die

And I want a new icon
I want a new icon
I want a new icon

I want a new icon
I want a new icon
I want a new icon

I want a new icon
I want a new icon
I want a new icon

I want a new icon

I want a new icon
I want a new icon

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Icon" by Ohmme depict a person who seeks change, specifically a new icon. The song's opening lines speak of how the singer only grazes the surface of conversations, skimming them. Similarly, their frustration with a year-old helium balloon that wouldn't pop is a metaphor for how they feel stuck in life. Later in the song, they mention a list of terrible things they once thought they needed but no longer do. These lyrics reveal a craving to shed their old self and start anew.

Additionally, the lyrics touch on some form of disjointedness or distancing. The singer rounds out their edges to appear softer and diffuse, yet the second toe is numb. The mention of a grizzly sludge that they kick further emphasizes this theme. These moments in the lyrics suggest the singer's discomfort with aspects of themselves and their environment.

Overall, the song's lyrics express a longing for change and newness, specifically in the form of a new icon. The lyrics also touch on themes of grasping for newness and the desire to let go of old things and ways of being.

@tannerin

easily the best song in 5/4 I’ve heard this year

@johnstinchcomb8156

I love this track. Only discovered them recently & really love what I've heard. It would be interesting to take an account of how many great "pop" songs there are in asymmetrical meters. Off the top of my head I can only think of one other. "Lover Killer" by My Brightest Diamond. Most of it's in 7/4. Except for the chorus which is straight 4/4. Great track tho. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXeTsIFJ3I8 There's gotta be others. I'm just drawing a blank.

@tannerin

i guess its more 5/8

@johnstinchcomb8156

Definitely 5/8. But how often are we hit with asymmetrical meters in pop music? It can take a little listening to sort it out.
