Another Suitcase In Another Hall
Orlando Pops Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I don't expect my love affairs
To last for long
Never fool myself
That my dreams will come true

Being used to trouble
I'd anticipate it
But all the same I hate it
Wouldn't you

So what happens now
(Another suitcase in another hall)
So what happens now
(Take your picture off another wall)
Where am I going to
(You'll get by you always have before)
Where am I going to

Time and time again
I've said that I don't care
That I'm immune to gloom
That I'm hard through and through

But every time it matters
All my words desert me
So anyone can hurt me
And they do

So what happens now
(Another suitcase in another hall)
So what happens now
(Take your picture off another wall)
Where am I going to
(You'll get by you always have before)
Where am I going to

Call in three months time
And I'll be fine I know
Well maybe not that fine
But I'll survive anyhow

I won't recall the names and places
Of the sad occasions
But that's no consolation
Here and now

So what happens now
(Another suitcase in another hall)
So what happens now
(Take your picture off another wall)
Where am I going to
(You'll get by you always have before)

Where am I going to
(Don't ask anymore)

Overall Meaning

"Another Suitcase in Another Hall" is a lament sung by Perón's young mistress, Eva, who has just been kicked out of the presidential palace. She reflects on the transitory nature of her love affairs, but admits that they still hurt her. She worries about where she's going to go and how she's going to survive. She knows she'll be fine eventually but is unsure of how she will get there. She finds no comfort in the thought that someday she won't even remember the pain she's feeling now.

Overall, the song is a bittersweet reflection on the impermanence of romantic love and the emotional toll it can take on someone. Eva knows that she's been here before and will likely be here again, but still, the pain of losing someone she cares about is very real to her. She tries to find hope in the idea that she's always been able to get by, but even that is cold comfort in the moment.
