What are you trying to say? When this came out there were pop stars who had to be good looking to get on, same as now. But this is jazz, and no-one bothers how they look. There's jazz stars now, and no-one bothers how they look either. But in my opinion their personality comes out in their music, and that's far more interesting than a fancy haircut any day!

I've been a fan of Oscar since I was a child in the early 80's. When it comes to Oscar Peterson, I have only 2 regrets. 1. The 2 times I had the privilege of seeing him live, I was just too young (10-11yo) to really appreciate it. 2. Oscar has made it nearly impossible for me to really enjoy any other Jazz pianists. (he's just so damn good) All other Jazz pianists are now relegated to "background noise". An exception would be Vince Guaraldi & Ray Charles. (They have their own unique styles)

So many versions of this song are just plain camp. Peterson gives us thickness, richness, then stark simplicity. His rapid-fire runs aren't even noticeable as such, they just add texture. Nobody has ever drawn such beauty and art out of this song. Although, in the realm of "pure beauty" without all the embellishment, I once heard Joe Wilder do it on Flugelhorn and it was delightful.

"Unmelt myself" ............. I love it !!! Hey seein's how we're all O P fans, I STRONGLY suggest you find the "Peterson/Pass/Pedersen" Album recorded live at the London House in Chicago 1973. Oscar Peterson: Piano.... Joe Pass: Guitar, & Niels-Henning Pedersen on Bass. There's only 5 tracks on it but it's 40 minutes long and worth every minute of it !!! Especially "Chicago Blues", it's 14 minutes by itself. and also "Easy Listening Blues" it's 8 minutes. You will hit replay

Let me tell you a story not quite as romantic. I was on a bus in France and I needed to go. The rest of the party were in some kind of daydream. I approached the driver without a word of French. You can imagine how that went.

Duke Ellington is great, (of course!) but he was renowned more for his composing. He was an accomplished pianist in his own right, but he's not in the same league as O.P. (then again...who is???) I also forget to mention Art Tatum. He's arguably the greatest Jazz pianist that ever lived. He was better even the Oscar, (& heavily influenced O.P.) though I like Oscar's style & music better.

I had the absolute pleasure of seeing Oscar Peterson 'live' on two occasions.
Once at the Barbican Centre in London and once at the Royal Festival Hall, on
London's Southbank. (Both in the 1980's)
He was a genius, a gentleman and a well respected man; both in the music world and
outside of it.
I doubt that the world will ever see the likes of him again, he certainly was a one of.
