The Dock of the Bay
Otis Redding Lyrics

Sittin' in the mornin' sun
I'll be sittin' when the evenin' comes
Watchin' the ships roll in
Then I watch 'em roll away again

I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay
Watchin' the tide, roll away
I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay
Wastin' time
I left my home in Georgia
And I headed for the Frisco Bay
'Cause I've got nothin' to live for
Looks like nothin's gonna come my way, so

I'm just come sittin' on the dock of the bay
Watchin' the tide roll away
I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay, wastin' time

Looks like nothin's gonna change
Everything seems to stay the same
I can't do what ten people tell me to do
So I guess I'll remain the same

I'm sittin' here restin' my bones
And this loneliness won't leave me alone
This two thousand miles I roamed
Just to make this dock my home
Now I'm just sittin' on the dock of the bay

Watchin' the tide roll away
Sittin' on the dock of the bay
I'm wastin' time

Sittin' in the mornin' sun
I'll be sittin' when the evenin' comes
Watching the ships roll in
Then I watch 'em roll away again, yeah
I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay
Watchin' the tide roll away, ooh
I'm just sittin' on the dock of the bay
Wastin' time

I left my home in Georgia
Headed for the Frisco Bay
'Cause I've had nothin' to live for
It look like nothin's gonna come my way
So I'm just gon' sittin' on the dock of the bay
Watchin' the tide roll away, ooh
I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay, wastin' time

Look like nothin's gonna change
Everything, still remains the same
I can't do what ten people tell me to do
So I guess I'll remain the same, yes

Sittin' here restin' my bones
And this loneliness won't leave me alone, listen
Two thousand miles, I roam
Just to make this dock my home
Now I'm just gon' sit, at the dock of the bay
Watchin' the tide roll away, ooh yeah
Sittin' on the dock of the bay
Wastin' time

We are soooo lucky that Otis recorded this just a days before he passed away.

@Benjamin Leesman ok that’s why the song structure is a bit different. I hadn’t ever heard that about Otis. What a talent the world of music lost 😞 that day.

He wanted to write a concept album. This was his first song for the project. Hard to imagine which wonderful music he still had in store for us all...Such a loss!

This song reminds me of a girlfriend that I used to have way back. One Saturday I was hanging out at her house. 6 pm rolled around and I said "I have to go. We have a gig tonight and I have to meet my bandmates at 7." She said "NO! Don't go! Stay here with me!" I said "No. The guys can't do the show without me. I can't let them down like that!" She said, "If you leave it's over!". That was the last time I saw her. AND I don't miss her.
